At Your Service Knit Dishcloth

Hi, I’m Kristen Mangus, the knitting video host and designer from the Good Knit Kisses YouTube channel. I love teaching and being the knitting host for Yarnspirations this year.

Can’t you just smell it? The rich scent of sage-rubbed turkey, the sweetness of candied sweet potatoes and the tang of Grandma’s homemade cranberry sauce. There’s nothing like family working together in the kitchen preparing for a big family dinner. You just finished peeling the potatoes, rinsed your hands and you naturally reach for the towel hanging on the front of Grandma’s oven door. It’s there. You know it’s there because Grandma always hangs a fresh towel or dishcloth out before a visit.

Now you can knit your own classic cloth like Grandma used to do, but with an updated modern look. The At Your Service Knit Dishcloth from Yarnspirations puts a new spin on a family favorite. The bold colors topped with grey are the perfect complement to any kitchen décor.

When you knit with Bernat Handicrafter Cotton you know you’re using the softest, most durable cotton around. You’ve also got over 50 colors to choose from so it’s always a perfect match.

Let’s make Grandma proud!

The At Your Service Knit Dishcloth is knit from the bottom up in seed stitch with a garter stitch border. After casting on knit a 1” garter stitch border. Then you switch to the main stitch pattern. It’s a one row repeat. You’re going to love how easy and fast this knits up. You’ll have 8 inches done before you know it.

Let's Make Grandma Proud!

Shape it up!

Once you knit 8” it’s time to start the shaping. I show you both decreases (Ssk and K2tog) needed to taper the top of the cloth. These two decreases are worked just inside the garter border keeping a beautiful smooth edge. After working the decrease rows four times you are done with Contrast A. It’s time to switch colors and continue with the same stitch pattern for four more repeats in Contrast B.

Shape It Up!

Buttoned up!

Now you’re almost done, but it’s time to learn something new. Up until now all the decreases are only on the right side, but now you decrease on every row. When decreasing on the wrong side you need to learn the P2tog – purl two stitches together and P2togtbl – Purl 2 stitches together through the back loop. The P2togtbl is a long abbreviation but don’t worry it’s easy to do.

Buttoned Up!

Buttoned Up, Again!

With decreases on both sides you quickly decrease to 13 stitches and are ready to knit the top. The top portion of the cloth that buttons up is knit in garter stitch so it’s a breeze. Once you reach the desired length I show you how to create a buttonhole.

Sew On That Button!

That’s it! Bind off, weave in your ends and sew on the button.

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and pattern from Yarnspirations. You might even be ready to teach Grandma some new knitting tricks.

Happy Knitting!
