Cro-Shayley Makes a Turtle Power Mask

Any little ""Turtle Power"" fans out there? Oh man, do I have the perfect pattern for you! My nephews love the super turtle heros so I thought I'd try making them a mask using 2 patterns from RedHeart.com. This would be a cute inexpensive Halloween costume especially if you already had the colors you wanted in your yarn stash.

I have made the mask from the Halloween Boy Hero pattern before when I created the "Super Hero"" Outfit for my then 9 month old.fter making the mask, I thought how cute it would be to sew it to a green hat to look like a turtle super hero so I kept that pattern idea in the back of my mind for a project later down the road.

Well... down the road we are.

To create a ""Turtle Power Mask"", first I crocheted the mask from the Halloween Boy Hero pattern. Using Red Heart Super Saver Turqua and Susan Bates; Crochet Hook 5.5mm [I-9 US] here are the steps to make the mask:

MASK
Eye Opening (make 2)
Ch 15; join with slip st in first ch to form a ring.
Round 1 (right side): Ch 1 (does not count as a st), work 25 hdc into ring; join with slip st to first hdc”25 hdc.

Fasten off, leaving 6 (15 cm) tail on 2nd eye opening for sewing.
With wrong sides of eye openings held together and sewing through both thicknesses, whipstitch 3 sts together (the first and 3rd stitches sewn are œjoined sts).

Face
Round 1: With right side facing, join yarn with sc in first joined st on left eye opening (if you are right-handed; right eye opening if you are left-handed), sc in next 22 st, sc in next joined st of same eye opening, sc in first joined st of 2nd eye opening, sc in next 22 st, sc in last joined st; join with slip st in first st”48 sc.
Round 2: Ch 2 (counts as first hdc), hdc in next 10 sts, 2 hdc in next st, place marker in first hdc made of 2 hdc, 2 hdc in next st, 2 sc in next st, sc in next 9 sts, sc in next 2 st, sc in next 9 sts, 2 sc in next st, 2 hdc in each of next 2 sts, place marker in last hdc made, hdc in last 11 sts; join with slip st to beginning ch-2; change to A.

Note
Move markers up in Round 3.
Round 3:
Ch 1, sc in same st as joining and in each st; join with slip st to first st. Fasten off and weave in ends. See below the picture of the finished mask. Set aside.

To create the green turtle hat, I used Red Heart's Child's Hat pattern. Using Red Heart Super Saver Paddy Green and Susan Bates; Crochet Hook 5.5mm [I-9 US] here are the steps to make the hat:

HAT
Ch 1, sc in same st as joining and in each
Ch 5, join to form a ring.
Round 1: Ch 3, 11 dc in ring; join -- 12 sts.
Round 2: Ch 3, dc in same st as joining, 2 dc in each st around; join -- 24 sts.
Round 3: Ch 3, * 2 dc in next st, dc in next st; repeat from * around; join -- 36 sts.
Round 4: Ch 3, dc in next st, * 2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts; repeat from * around; join “ 48 sts.
Rounds 5-11 (or desired length depending on size of child's head): Ch 3, dc in each st around; join.
Rounds 12: Ch 1, sc in each st around; join.
Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Joining Mask to Hat
Using Red Heart Super Saver Turqua and holding the hat and mask with wrong side facing and working through both thicknesses, join Round 3 of mask to Round 12 of hat with a sl st starting at left stitch marker on mask and ending at right stitch marker. See pictures below.
