Have you ever tried to teach someone how to knit or crochet? When was the last time you tried? My latest attempt was this past weekend. I was relaxing at a local sports bar, finishing off the last of my carrot cake and coffee, with my Crochet Prayer Shawl project on display beside my plate. Some of my friends and I were talking about the football game, and laughing at some of the jokes we shared. When I finished my cake, I pushed it aside, then picked up my shawl to work some more stitches. My friend Laurie said, “Let me try that.” So, I handed it over, and she did a few twists and turns with the hook and needle, but could not figure out how to make a single stitch. So, we laughed, and I took it back in hand. I told her that I learned by watching videos online. She said that she learns best by doing it herself. So, I guess I’ll have to give it another go with her, using a larger hook and thicker yarn. I’ve actually been successful teaching a few people – mostly youngsters. Some of them really latched onto knitting, while others preferred crochet. I usually direct new crafters to the free videos on the Yarnspirations YouTube channel. They are very helpful, and answer a lot of questions. I’ve made a few videos myself, as well, to fill in the gaps for some people. Most beginners want to make something they will actually use, so it’s best to let them choose their own project from the Beginner Projects here on Yarnspirations.
