In some instances it is necessary to cast on more stitches while the knitting is in progress. This is true in making buttonholes, which occurs within a row, or in shaping sleeves, which occurs at the beginning of the row. Step 1 Knit the next stitch in the usual way, but do not drop the old stitch from the left needle. Step 2 Transfer the new stitch you just made onto the left needle−1 stitch cast on. Make the next cast-on stitch in the stitch just completed by repeating Steps 1 and 2.
