Craft it: Geometric, Plastic Canvas Pencil Case

Plastic canvas crafts are a great way to get a lot of bang out of your yarn buck; they require less yardage for a large, visual impact. Let’s face it, as we’re all shopping for back-to-school clothes, shoes, and what feels like an endless list of supplies, couldn’t we all use a little cost-effective crafting, right now?

For this week’s post I took some Patons Classic Wool Worsted that I had left over from a couple of recent knitting projects (Sheep(ish), Simply Soft, or Satin will all work just as well, too!), and got to work on a geometric pencil case that’s great for the kids, but kind of kitschy-cool enough for us adults, too. Here’s how to make one!

Materials

1 sheet, white plastic canvas (available at craft stores)

3 colors, worsted-weight yarn ( I used Patons Classic Wool Worsted in colors: A) Lemongrass, B) Coral, C) Flagstone

Yarn needle Scissors

Directions

Cut plastic canvas into pieces measuring the following: (bottom & top) 1 1/2″ x 3/4″ [4 cm x 2 cm], (sides) 8 1/4″ x 3/4″ [21 cm x 2 cm], (front & back) 1 1/2″ x 8 1/4″ [4 cm x 21 cm], (flap) 1 1/2″ x 2″ [4 cm x 5 cm] (also cut the bottom corners out to create a T-shape), and (strap) 1 1/2″ x 1/2″ [4 cm x 1.25 cm].
Using yarn, needle and charts & photos as guide, embroider pieces with Colors A & B.
Assemble case using Color C, and whip stitching all pieces together, including strap to front piece to correspond with with flap.
Using C, whip stitch around any exposed edges not covered by seaming.That’s it; you’re done!
