This tutorial shows you how to make a Soft yarn crochet granny rectangle cowl woven with Boutique Unforgettable yarn that becomes fringe at the bottom of the cowl.

Crochet Granny Rectangle Instructions

The crochet cowl is a granny rectangle worked in the round, so you will be working on both sides of the foundation chain. The cowl is seamed together at the end of the project, after you have completed the weaving portion.

Abbreviations

A = Color A; B = Color B; ch = chain; dc = double crochet; st(s) = stitch(es); [ ] = work directions in brackets the number of times specified; * of ** = repeat whatever follows the * or ** as indicated.

Instructions

Chain 32 in A (entire cowl is made in A).

Round 1: [2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] all worked into 4^th ch from hook (counts as first dc), * ch 2, skip 2, dc in next 3 sts, repeat from * 4 times, ch 2, skip 2, [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in last st on top of foundation ch. Turn to work into bottom of foundation ch, ** ch 2, skip 2, dc in next 3 sts, repeat from ** 4 times, ch 2, slip st into top of 1^st dc to close round.

Round 2: Ch 5, [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in corner space, ch 2, [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in next corner space, 3 dc in each of next 6 ch 2 spaces, [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in corner space, ch 2, [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in next corner space, 3 dc in each of next 5 ch 2 spaces, 2 dc in next ch 2 sp, slip st to 3^rd ch of 1^st ch 5 to close round.

Note: The following rounds are essentially repeating the instructions in rounds 2-3. The difference is in the number of clusters between each corner space.

Finish off and weave in ends.

Changing The Size of Your Cowl

The instructions above create a crochet rectangle that is approximately 24" wide and 16" tall; once folded in half and seamed it creates a cowl that is 12"" and 16"" tall. But what if you want to create a rectangle that is wider or skinnier? You simply need to adapt the number of chains in your starting chain. This will alter the instructions slightly, changing the number of clusters between each corner, but the basic instructions will remain the same. Your starting chain must be at least 12 chains long and must be a multiple of 5 + 2. A shorter foundation chain (such as one that starts with chain 12) is going to produce a more square-shaped (wider) rectangle; a longer foundation chain (such as one that starts with chain 52) will produce a more oblong-shaped (skinnier) rectangle.

Weaving Into Granny Rectangle

After completing your crochet granny rectangle, it's time to weave the Boutique Unforgettable yarn through it.

Cut eighteen 50 strands of Color B.

Lay the cowl out flat, right side up.

Beginning in bottom left corner, leave approximately ten inches hanging for the fringe and begin weaving.

Weave one strand through the chain spaces vertically up to the top left corner. You will work under one cluster, over the next, under the next, etc.

If you begin by weaving over the first cluster, you will end by weaving over the top cluster. You should see 7 strips of Unforgettable weaving between the clusters in the first vertical.

Continuing with the same strand, you will work vertically down through the next set of chain spaces, just to the right of the first row. Weave under the ch 2 sp, over the first cluster, and repeat under/ over to the bottom of the vertical row.

At the bottom of that row, you should see another 7 strips of Unforgettable yarn, staggered slightly against the first row.

You should be left with approximately ten inches of yarn at the bottom.

Tie a knot in the two 10 ends to secure the fringe.

Note: You don™t want the weaving to pull too tight at either end, so make sure that you flatten the weaving, check both the top of the bottom of the cowl to see that it™s not too tight (if it is, it will be curling in on itself, and you just need to loosen the weaving a bit). Then secure your knot.

Repeat with the next seventeen strands of Unforgettable yarn. You will have eighteen strands, each woven up vertically then down and secured into fringe at the bottom. Note that you will have one vertical row of clusters left at the end that does not have any weaving in it.

Cowl Finishing Instructions

Turn the cowl over so the wrong side is facing up. Fold it vertically so that the two ends are touching each other, with the fringe hanging down at the bottom. Seam the two sides shut together to create the cowl.

You can use whatever seaming method you prefer; this example was created using a slip stitch seam. Turn the cowl inside out so that the right side is facing out and it is ready for wear.
