The stocking stitch is a basic knitting stitch that combines both the knit stitch and the purl stitch to create a fabric with "V" shapes on the "right" side of the fabric and bumps and waves on the "wrong" side of the fabric. This stitch, also known as the stockinette stitch, is often used to deliberately create a rolled hem or cuff on knit garments and is created by alternating a row of knit stitch with a row of purl stitch. Step 1 Count out your stitches and make sure all of your loops are pointing upwards. Step 2 Pull the loops from the working yarn through the loops that are on your project from back to front. Step 3 When you get to the end, continue pulling the loops from the working yarn through the loops that are on your project from the back to the front.
