As a designer I seek out trends every season by reading blogs, articles and magazines to see what other experts are saying, but the easiest way to get a feel for trends is as simple as keeping your eyes open as you go about your daily life. One of my favorite things is to go for walks with my family, so I often find myself walking up the main street in my town and checking out all the boutique window displays- these are a fantastic place to notice trends! Shopkeepers fill their windows with new products to entice us to shop and, if you look closely, you will start to notice themes that are a direct reaction to what is going on in the world around us. This year I have seen a real trend toward cozy textures in home décor with an emphasis on soothing, warm, and lounge-like spaces. I don’t know about you, but for me, 2020 has been one of the toughest years I can remember. With so much uncertainty, and all of us spending so much time at home, it makes sense that we are seeing trends that support creating comforting space where we can relax and renew. One of the most effective ways for us, as yarn enthusiasts, to create the cozy spaces we all seem to be craving, is by enveloping our homes in textures we can create with our craft. Whether we create textures with our knit and crochet stitches, line our walls to create cozy spaces, use lusciously textured yarns, or surround our families with grounding visual textures – we have so many tools we can use to create cozy pieces to help calm us and keep us warm. Enjoy exploring the 5 trends below!

tactile texture

Luscious textural yarns are the perfect way to create cozy and calming home décor pieces (and to enjoy a bit of a self-care experience too)! With so many textures to choose from, whether you pick a cozy chenille, a luxurious velvet, a simple twist, or something with a bit of a halo, the tactile qualities of your yarn will help to enhance your pieces and accentuate your stitch work. The feel of the yarns running through your fingers will also add to the calming effects of your overall knit and crochet experience helping you to relax and meditate as you create. We know that sensory items can help soothe anxiety, so it makes sense that adding textures to your craft, and to the blankets and pillows you will cuddle, is the perfect trend to help you create a rejuvenating space.

high texture stitches

Textural stitches are another fantastic way to enhance the tactile experience in your home and the perfect way to add stunning visual interest to your pieces! Bobbles, loops, bullions, post stitches, cables and surface crochet are all great ways to add exaggerated texture to your blankets, pillows, and home décor. Whether you keep it simple with smooth yarns that offer great stitch definition or amp up your tactile experience with a combination of highly dimensional stitches and textural yarns, texture is a key trend for this year’s interiors.

wall hangings

I don’t know about you, but as an avid yarn crafter, I am in my most relaxed mindset when I am surrounded by (copious amounts of) yarn. Wall hangings are a great way to transfer our craft to our walls and allow us to really envelope our spaces in warmth. This trend has been around for a while and there are so many options: From knit and crochet, to macramé and other no-needle options, wall hangings are a great way to create beautiful art to enhance, and warm, your home.

velvet

The velvet trend has been around for a few seasons too and I don’t see it going anywhere anytime soon! The lush shine of velvet is the perfect texture to create luxurious pieces that are so soft you can’t help but relax when you cuddle-up with them. Create simple designs in basic stitches or incorporate even more texture by using interesting stitch techniques- either way, velvet is here to stay!

geometric

Our last trend, the geometric trend is a perfect example of how to use pattern to create visual texture in your home. Although the colorful patterns are a little more energetic than our previous trends, the ordered designs of repeating patterns maintain the sense of grounding and relaxation we are craving in our homes. Choose a limited color palette and simple geometry to create pieces that offer an uplifting sense of comfort.

I began knitting and crocheting as a child when I learned to love yarn by admiring my Granny-made afghans that arrived promptly every Christmas. Since studying Interior Design in college, I have been lucky enough to combine my love of yarn and cozy spaces into a fulfilling career. I have recently joined the Patons design team and can’t wait to share more of my ideas with you!
