Free Bernat Chunky Knit Hood Pattern

Item# BRK0129-029734V

This chunky knit hood is perfect for layering under jackets and coats for added warmth throughout cooler months. It's a cross between a classic dickey and a modern collar scarf with the addition of a hood. Worked in Bernat Softee Chunky, a super-bulky weight yarn, it will knit up fast for the intermediate knitter. Bonus: It's machine washable and dryable, too, for easy care. The front and back panels of this chunky knit hood pattern are worked separately with simple shoulder shaping. The front panel features a shifting rib formed by decreasing two stitches in one part of the row and adding two stitches in another to keep the stitch count even while adding movement to the stitch direction. The remaining neck stitches of the front and back panels are then joined and worked flat until the hood height is reached with a few increases along the way to add depth. Then, the top of the hood is formed with simple short-rows. Working stitches along the middle of the row with decreases at the end of each row creates a gusset, and eventually all stitches are worked. To neaten the hood opening, stitches are picked up around the face and knit in the round in stocking stitch for several rounds and then cast off for a rolled hem.
