We’re seeing fringe in all the ready-to-wear and trend reports. Fringe gives garments and scarfs a fashionable Boho feel and it softens the modern edges of purchased home décor items. So I thought I would try adding fringe to a table runner and tank top. I used Red Heart Super Saver to make fringe on the inexpensive ramie table runner that had a loose weave to pull the yarn through. And then used Aunt Lydia’s Classic Crochet Thread Size 10 along the neckline of a tank top. Here’s how to do the table runner fringe… Materials: Red Heart Super Saver: 1 skein 313 Aran, scissors, crochet hook (US D3 / 3.25mm or any size that fits through the fabric) Prep work: Cut 12”-long strands of the Super Saver; 2 strands for each fringe across the ends. Step 1 Fold two yarn strands in half. Insert hook from back to front and pull center of strands through to wrong side. Step 2 Take cut ends and insert through the loop. Pull ends to tighten knot. Repeat across both ends of runner, evenly spacing the fringes. Step 3 To make double knot fringe, use 2 strands from one knot and 2 strands from the next knot and tie a second row of knots about ½-inch below first row (or desired distance from first row). Repeat across all fringes. Trim fringe evenly across. Here’s how to do the tank top fringe… Since the knit fabric is too dense to use a crochet hook directly into the fabric (and I was afraid it would make a runner in the fabric), a row of blanket stitches is done to knot the fringe into. This technique can be used on any fabric, like a scarf or pillow cover. Materials: Aunt Lydia’s Classic Crochet Thread Size 10: 1 ball 332 Hot Pink, scissors, embroidery needle with large eye, crochet hook (US D3 / 3.25mm or any size that accommodates the fringe) Prep work: Cut 10”-long strands of the crochet thread; 4 strands for each fringe across the neckline area. Step 1 With one strand of crochet thread, make blanket stitches along line where you want the fringe knots to be. Stitches shown are about ¼” wide. Step 2 Fold 4 strands of the cut thread in half. Insert crochet hook under the blanket stitch and pull center of strands through the stitch. Step 3 Take cut ends and insert through the loop. Pull ends to tighten knot. Repeat in each blanket stitch across. Trim fringe to desired length.
