I like to make small gifts for my group of friends each year. This year, I decided that I would make a snowman ornament for everyone. I couldn't find a pattern I liked, so I made my own. Here it is! This snowman is flat, so it is quick to make. I'll be making several with different colored scarves for my different friends. You can also make a family one by using different size hooks -- make adults by using larger hooks, and children by using smaller hooks. Supplies Red Heart Super Saver;: 1 skein each in 316 Soft White A, 254 Pumpkin B, and 312 Black D. For this snowman I used 885 Delft C. This is a great project for partial skeins. Feel free to substitute 311 White for 316 Soft White, and to use your favorite of the many colors of Super Saver for the scarf. The other snowmen shown use (l-r) 528 Medium Purple, 718 Shocking Pink, and 672 Spring Green. Susan Bates; Crochet Hooks: 5.5mm [US I-9] and 4.0mm [US G-6] Yarn needle Gauge is not important for this project. Pattern BODY With A and larger hook, ch 2.Round 1: Sc 4 times into second ch from hook. Slip st in first sc to join the round -- 4 sc.Round 2: Ch 1. 2 sc in each sc around. NOSE With B and smaller hook, leaving a long tail for sewing, ch 4. Row 1: Slip st in second ch from hook. Sc in next 2 chains. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. SCARF With C and smaller hook, ch 16. Row 1: Sc in second ch from hook. Sc in next 5 sc. Sc2tog. Sc in remaining sts. Fasten off. Weave in ends. ASSEMBLY Sew Head to Body with long tails. Head should be positioned so it overlaps Body in front. Sew Nose to the middle of Head with long tails. With D, embroider two French Knots on the Head above the Nose to make eyes. Embroider three French knots down the mi Addle of Body for buttons. To make a French Knot, insert the yarn from wrong side to right side. Leave a tail to weave in later on on the wrong side of the snowman. Wrap the yarn around the yarn needle as shown in figure B. Insert the needle into the snowman so that the entrance (""2"" in the diagram) is near the original place where the yarn came out (""1"" in the diagram). Pull the yarn gently through the snowman so that a little knot rests on the right side of the snowman when you are finished. Arrange the scarf so the shorter section is across the junction of Head and Body and the longer section is loose off to the side. Sew the scarf in place. Sew in all ends. Cut piece of A and slip it through the top of Head. Tie to form a loop for hanging.
