question about the earflaps.......I'm a tad confused as to where to start the ear flaps..Pattern doesn't really explain very well.

The hat is worked in rounds and when you have the 7/8/9" that you need then you begin working back and forth starting from the beginning of the round.
First Earflap:**1st row: (RS). Ch 1. 1 sc in each ofnext 14 (16-18) sc. Turn. Leave rem stsunworked.
2nd row: Ch 1. 1 sc in each sc across.Turn.
Rep last row until Earflap measures2 (2½-3)" [5 (6-7.5) cm], ending on aWS row.
Then continue with the shaping for the earflap and fasten off.
For the second ear flap you skip the number of single crochets noted below and then join your yarn again with the right side facing and continue as noted in pattern.
With RS facing, skip next 8 (8-11) unworked sc. Join MC with sl st to next
st. Ch 1. Work from ** to ** as given for First Earflap.
