Set of four size 2¾ mm (U.S. 2) double-pointed needles or size needed to obtain tension. Cable needle.

GAUGE

30 sts and 40 rows = 4 ins [10 cm] in stocking st.

INSTRUCTIONS


Cast on 64 sts loosely. Divide into (20, 24, 20) sts on 3 needles. Join in rnd, placing a marker on first st.
Work 1½ ins [4 cm] in (K2. P2) ribbing, inc 2 sts evenly across last rnd. 66 sts.
Next 3 rnds: Purl.
Proceed in XO pat as follows:
1st rnd: *P4. M1. Knit into front, back and front of next st (3 sts made from 1 st). M1. P5. K1. M1. P4. M1P. P3. M1. K1. P3. Rep from * twice more. 87 sts.

8th rnd: *P2. K4. P2. C4F. Rep from * around.
Rep last 8 rnds for Cable Pat until work from beg measures approx 8 ins [20.5 cm], ending on a 3rd or 7th rnd of pat.
Slip last 6 sts from 1st needle onto beg of 2nd needle. Slip first 8 sts from 3rd needle onto end of 2nd needle. Sts are now divided as (18, 38, 16) sts.
Next rnd: 1st needle: P2. (K1. K2tog. K1. P2tog) twice. K1. K2tog. K1. 2nd needle: Work in cable pat. 3rd needle: (K1. K2tog. K1. P2tog) twice. K1. K2tog. K1. 62 sts now divided as (13, 38, 11) sts.

1st rnd: 1st needle: Knit to last 4 sts. K2tog. K2. 2nd needle: Pat across 38 sts. 3rd needle: K2. ssk. Knit to end of needle.
2nd rnd: 1st needle: Knit. 2nd needle: Pat across 38 sts. 3rd needle: Knit.
Rep last 2 rnds until there are 65 sts divided as (13, 38, 14) sts.

Keeping 2nd needle in Cable Pat, work even until foot from picked up sts at heel measures aprox 6½ (-8½) ins [16.5 (19-21.5) cm] ending on a 3rd or 7th rnd of Cable Pat.
Next rnd: 1st needle: Knit. 2nd needle: K2. (K2tog. K2) 9 times. 3rd needle: Knit. 56 sts.
Rearrange sts as follows: Slip first st from 2nd needle onto end of 1st needle. Sts are now divided as (14, 28, 14) sts.

Shape toe: 1st rnd: 1st needle: Knit to last 4 sts. K2tog. K2. 2nd needle: K2. ssk. Knit to last 4 sts. K2tog. K2. 3rd needle: K2. ssk. Knit to end of needle.
2nd rnd: Knit.
Rep last 2 rnds until there are 16 sts divided as (4, 8, 4) sts. Graft 2 sets of 8 sts tog.
