MATERIALS

Woman's
Classic Wool Worsted (100 g/3.5 oz;192 m/210 yds)
Main Color (MC) Currant (77531) 2
Set of five size 4.5 mm (U.S. 7) double pointed knitting needles or size needed to obtain tension.
Man's
Classic Wool Worsted (100 g/3.5 oz;192 m/210 yds)
Main Color (MC) Mercury (77044) 2
Set of five size 4.5 mm (U.S. 7) double pointed knitting needles or size needed to obtain tension.

GAUGE

20 sts and 26 rows = 4" [10 cm] in stocking st.

INSTRUCTIONS

The instructions are written for Woman’s size. If changes are necessary for Man’s size the instructions will be written thus ( ). When only one number is given in black, it applies to both sizes.

Cast on 92 (104) sts. Divide sts evenly on 4 needles [23 (26) sts per needle]. Join in rnd, placing a marker on rst st.
1st rnd: *K1. P1. Rep from * around.
Rep last rnd (K1. P1) ribbing for 1½" [4 cm].

1st to 4th rnds: Knit.
5th to 9th rnds: Purl.
Rep last 9 rnds 9 times more.

Shape top: 1st rnd: *K2. K2tog. Rep from * around. 69 (78) sts.
2nd rnd: Knit.
3rd rnd: *K1. K2tog. Rep from * around. 46 (52) sts.
4th rnd: Knit.
5th rnd: *K2tog. Rep from * around. 23 (26) sts. Break yarn leaving a long end. Draw end tightly through rem sts and fasten securely.

Optional
Pom-pom: Wind 2 strands of yarn around 4 ngers approx 90 times. Tie tightly in the middle and leave a long end for attaching to Hat. Cut loops at both ends and trim to a smooth round shape. Sew to top of Hat.
