Set of four double pointed knitting needles sizes 2¾ mm (U.S. 2) or size needed to obtain tension.

GAUGE

32 sts and 44 rows = 4 ins [10 cm] in stocking st.

INSTRUCTIONS

 

 

 

 

 

The instructions are written for smallest size. If changes are necessary for larger sizes the instructions will be written thus ( ).

Note: Instructions begin at toe. If desired, try sock on to determine correct length before beg heel shaping.
With A, cast on 10 sts.
Next row: (RS). Knit.
Turn work upside down.With WS facing and second needle, pick up and knit 10 sts along cast on edge. 20 sts. With 3rd needle, K10 across 1st needle, then with free needle, K10 from 2nd needle.
Next rnd: K5 (counts as third needle). With another needle, K5 (counts as first needle).With last needle, K10 (counts as 2nd needle). K5 from third needle. Join in rnd, placing a marker on first st.
1st rnd: 1st needle: Knit to last st. M1. K1. 2nd needle: K1. M1. Knit to last st. M1. K1. 3rd needle: K1.M1. Knit to end of needle.
2nd rnd: Knit.
Rep last 2 rnds until there are 68 sts divided as 17 sts on first and third needles and 34 sts on second needle. Break A.
Place first marker at end of last rnd.
With MC, knit in rnds, until foot from marked row measures 5½ (6-7) ins [14 (15-18) cm] (or try on sock for desired length to heel).
Make heel: Divide 34 sts on 2nd needle onto 2 needles and leave for instep. Knit 17 sts off first needle onto end of third needle. 34 sts for heel.
Join B and proceed as follows:
Next row: (WS). P33. Turn.
Next row: K32. Turn.
Next row: P31. Turn.
Cont working in this manner, having 1 st less at end of every row to 12 sts.
Next row: Sl1P. P12. Turn.
Next row: Sl1K. K13. Turn.
Next row: Sl1P. P14. Turn.
Cont working in this manner, having 1 st more at end of every row to 34 sts slipping first st of each row. Break B. Place second marker at end of last row.
Rearrange sts as follows: 22 sts on first and second needles and 24 sts on third needle.
With MC, knit in rnds until work from second marker measures 6 ins [15 cm].
Next rnd: *K2. P2. Rep from * around.
Work 3 more rnds in (K2. P2) ribbing.
With A, work 4 rnds in (K2. P2) ribbing.
With MC, work 4 rnds in (K2. P2) ribbing.
With B, work 4 rnds in (K2. P2) ribbing.
With MC, work 3 rnds in (K2. P2) ribbing. Cast off loosely in ribbing.
