INSTRUCTIONS

The instructions are written for smaller size. If changes are necessary for larger size the instructions will be written thus ( ). Numbers for each size are shown in the same color throughout the pattern. When only one number is given in black, it applies to both sizes.

LEGWARMERS (make 2).
With smaller needles and A, cast on 48 (60) sts. Divide sts evenly on 3 needles. Join in rnd, placing marker on first st.
Work in (K2. P2) ribbing until work from beg measures 3 ins [7.5 cm].
Next rnd: *K12 (15). M1. Rep from * around. 52 (64) sts.
Change to larger needles.
1st to 5th rnds: With MC, knit.
6th rnd: With A, knit.
7th rnd: With A, purl.
8th rnd: With A, knit.
These 8 rnds form Pat.
Cont in pat until work from beg measures approx 15 (16) ins [38 (40.5) cm], ending with a 4th rnd.
Change to smaller needles.
Next rnd: With A, *K11(14). K2tog. Rep from * around. 48 (60) sts.
With A, work in (K2. P2) ribbing for 3 ins [7.5 cm].
Cast off in ribbing.

HAT
With smaller needles and A, cast on 88 (104) sts. Divide sts evenly on 3 needles. Join in rnd, placing marker on first st.
Work in (K2.P2) ribbing for 2 ins [5 cm].
Next rnd: *K2. M1. Rep from * around. 132 (156) sts.
Change to larger needles.
1st to 5th rnds: With MC, knit.
6th rnd: With A, knit.
7th rnd: With A, purl.
8th rnd: With A, knit.
These 8 rnds form Stripe Pat.
Rep these 8 rnds twice more.
Keeping cont of Stripe Pat, dec as follows:

Work 4 rnds Stripe Pat.
Next rnd: *K5 (7). ssk. K2tog. Rep from * around. 84 (108) sts.
Work 4 rnds Stripe Pat.
Next rnd: *K3 (5). ssk. K2tog. Rep from * around. 60 (84) sts.
Work 4 rnds Stripe Pat.
Next rnd: *K1 (3). ssk. K2tog. Rep from * around. 36 (60) sts.
