INSTRUCTIONS

The instructions are written for smallest size. If changes are necessary for larger sizes the instructions will be written thus ( ).
BACK
With MC and smaller needles cast on 53 (59-67-73) sts.
Work 7 rows garter st (knit every row) noting that first row is WS.
Change to larger needles and proceed in pat as follows:
1st row: (RS). With A, knit.
2nd row: With A, purl.
3rd row: With MC, *K1. P1.
Rep from * to last st. K1.
4th row: With MC, *K1. P1.
Rep from * to last st. K1.
5th row: With B, knit.
6th row: With B, purl.
7th and 8th rows: As 3rd and 4th rows.
9th row: With C, knit.
10th row: With C, purl.
11th and 12th rows: As 3rd and 4th rows.
These 12 rows form pat.
Cont in pat until work from beg measures 6½ (-8-9) ins [16.5 (19-20.5-23) cm] ending with RS facing for next row.
Shape armholes: Keeping cont of pat, cast off 4 (6-7-8) sts beg next 2 rows. 45 (47-53-57) sts.
Cont even in pat until armhole measures 4½ (5-5½-6) ins [11.5 (12.5-14-15) cm] ending with RS facing for next row.
Shoulder shaping: Cast off 10 (11-13-14) sts beg next 2 rows.
Leave rem 25 (25-27-29) sts on a st holder.

LEFT FRONT
**With MC and smaller needles cast on 25 (29-33-35) sts and work 7 rows garter st noting that first row is WS, ending with RS facing for next row.**
Change to larger needles and proceed in pat as given for Back until work from beg measures 6½ (-8-9) ins [16.5 (19-20.5-23) cm] ending with RS facing for next row.
Armhole shaping: Keeping cont of pat, cast off 4 (6-7-8) sts beg next row. 21 (23-26-27) sts.
Work 3 rows even in pat.
Front shaping: Next row: (RS). Pat to last 2 sts. Work 2tog (front edge).
Work 1 row even in pat.
Dec 1 st at front edge on next and following alt rows until there are 14 (14-17-20) sts, then on following 4th rows until there are 10 (11-13-14) sts.
Cont even in pat until armhole measures same length as Back to shoulder ending with RS facing for next row. Cast off.

RIGHT FRONT
Work from ** to ** as given for Left Front.
Change to larger needles and proceed in pat as given for Back until work from beg measures 6½ (-8-9) ins [16.5 (19-20.5-23) cm] ending with WS facing for next row.
Armhole shaping: Keeping cont of pat, cast off 4 (6-7-8) sts beg next row. 21 (23-26-27) sts.
Work 2 rows even in pat.
Front shaping: Next row: (RS). Work 2tog (front edge). Pat to end of row.
Work 1 row even in pat.
Dec 1 st at front edge on next and following alt rows until there are 14 (14-17-20) sts, then on following 4th rows until there are 10 (11-13-14) sts.
Cont even in pat until armhole measures same length as Back to shoulder ending with RS facing for next row. Cast off.

SLEEVES
With MC and smaller needles cast on 35 (37-39-43) sts.
Work 7 rows in garter st noting that first row is WS and inc 2 (2-2-4) sts evenly across last row. 37 (39-41-47) sts.
Change to larger needles and proceed in pat as given for Back inc 1 st each end of needle on 3rd and following 6th rows to 47 (53-57-63) sts, taking inc sts into pat.
Cont even in pat until Sleeve from beg measures 5½ (6-7-8) ins [14 (15-18-20.5) cm] ending with RS facing for next row. Place a marker at each end of last row.
Work a further 6 (8-8-10) rows in pat. Cast off.

FINISHING
Pin garment pieces to measurements. Cover with a damp cloth leaving to dry. Sew shoulder seams.
Button and Buttonhole Band: Sew shoulder seams.
With right side of work facing, MC and smaller circular needle, pick up and knit 36 (40-44-48) sts up right front edge to first front dec, then 21 (24-26-27) sts up neck edge. Knit across 25 (25-27-29) sts from back st holder dec 1 st at centre. Pick up and knit 21 (24-26-27) sts down left front neck edge and 36
(40-44-48) sts down front edge. 138 (152-166-178) sts. Do not join.
Working back and forth across needle, proceed as follows:
Next 3 rows: Knit.
Girl Version only: Next row: (RS). K2. *Cast off 2 sts. K6 (7-8-9) (including st on needle after cast off). Rep from * 3 times more. Cast off 2 sts. Knit to end of row. (5 buttonholes).
Boy Version only: Next row: (RS). K102 (112-122-130).
*Cast off 2 sts. K6 (7-8-9) (including st on needle after cast off). Rep from * 3 times more. Cast off 2 sts. Knit to end of row. (5 buttonholes).
Both Versions: Next row: Knit, casting on 2 sts over cast off sts.
Next row: Knit.
Cast off knitways (WS).
Sew in sleeves placing rows above markers along cast off sts at armholes to form square armholes. Sew side and sleeve seams. Sew buttons to correspond to buttonholes.
