One pair size US 8 (5 mm) straight needles or size to obtain gauge. Set of 4 double-pointed needles (dpns) size US 8 (5mm) or One size US 6 (4mm) circular needle, 16"/40.5cm long. Stitch markers. Stitch holders. Yarn needle.

GAUGE

In stitch pattern 18 sts and 24 rows = 4"/10cm

INSTRUCTIONS

PATTERN STITCH
Textured Checks Pattern (multiple of 4)
Row 1 (RS) Knit.
Row 2 Knit.
Rows 3 & 4 (K2, p2) across.
Rows 5 & 6 Knit.
Row 7 & 8 (P2, k2) across.
Repeat Rows 1-8 for Textured Checks pattern.
 
BACK
With larger straight needles, CO 12 (16, 20, 24, 28) sts. Work in Textured Checks pattern and CO 4 sts at beg of the next 12 rows—60 (64, 68, 72, 76) sts. Continue even in pattern until side edge measures 8.5 (9.5, 10, 10.5, 11)"/21.5 (24, 25.5, 26.5, 28)cm from beginning. Place markers at each edge for sleeve placement. Continue until Back measures 14 (15, 16, 17, 18)"/35.5 (38, 40.5, 43, 45.5)cm from beginning. Place all sts on holder for shoulders and Back neck.
 
FRONT
With larger straight needles, CO 60 (64, 68, 72, 76) sts. Work in Textured Checks pattern until side edge measures 8.5 (9.5, 10, 10.5, 11)"/21.5 (24, 25.5, 26.5, 28)cm. Place markers at each edge for sleeve placement. Continue until Front measures 11 (12, 13, 14, 15)"/28 (30.5, 33, 35.5, 38)cm from beginning.
 
Shape neck
Next row (RS) Work in pattern across 22 (24, 24, 26, 28) sts, join 2nd ball of yarn, work center 16 (16, 20, 20, 20) sts and place them on a holder, continue across rem 22 (24, 24, 26, 28) sts. Working both sides at the same time with separate balls of yarn, dec 1 st at each neck edge every RS row 3 times. Work even on 19 (21, 21, 23, 25) sts until Front measures same as Back to shoulders.
 
Join shoulders
Using three-needle bind off, join shoulders as follows: Holding Front and Back with RS’s together, put right needle through 1st st on front needle then through 1st st on back needle, knit as usual. Repeat for 2nd st—2 sts now are on right needle. Lift right-most st over last st knit and off the needle—1 st bound off. Repeat across each shoulder.
 
Neck edging
Using dpns or circular needle, k22 (22, 26, 26, 26) Back neck sts, pick up and knit approximately 12 sts along side neck edge, k16 (16, 20, 20, 20) Front neck sts and approximately 12 sts along side neck edge. Join. (Purl 1 round, knit 1 round) twice. BO loosely.
 
Front hem
Using larger straight needles, pick up and k60 (64, 68, 72, 76) sts from CO edge. Knit 4 rows. BO.
 
Back hem
Using larger straight needles, pick up and k66 (70, 74, 78, 82) sts from CO edge. Knit 4 rows. BO.
 
SLEEVES
Using larger straight needles, pick up and k52 (52, 56, 60, 64) sts between markers. Work in Textured checks pattern, dec 1 st at each edge every 4 (4, 6, 6, 6) rows 10 (10, 11, 11, 13) times. Work even on 32 (32, 34, 38, 38) sts until Sleeve measures 8 (9.5, 11, 12.5, 13.5)"/20.5 (24, 28, 32, 34)cm from beginning. Knit 4 rows. BO.
 
FINISHING
Sew side and underarm seams. Using yarn needle, weave in ends.
