8 sts and 14 rows = 4 ins [10 cm] with larger needles in stocking st.

INSTRUCTIONS

The instructions are written for smaller size. If changes are necessary for larger size the instructions will be written thus ( ).

BACK
Note: Side shaping is done on WS of work.
Decs on sides will affect pattern consistency.
**With MC and larger needles, cast on 53 (57-63) sts loosely.
Knit 3 rows, noting first row is WS.
1st row: (RS). K1. *yfwd. K2tog. Rep from * to end of row.
2nd row: Purl.
3rd row: K2. *yfwd. Sl1. K1. psso. Rep from * to last st. K1.
4th row: Purl.
Last 4 rows form pat.
Rep 1st to 3rd rows of pat once more.
Keeping cont of pat, dec 1 st each end of needle on next and following 6th rows until there are 45 (49- 55) sts.
Work 2 rows even in pat.
Proceed in stripes as follows, AT SAME TIME, dec 1 st each end of every following 4th row:
With A, work 4 rows pat.
With B, work 4 rows pat.
With A, work 4 rows pat. 39 (43-49) sts.**
With MC, cont in pat, dec 1 st each end of following 4th rows until there are 35 (39-45) sts, then on alt rows until there are 29 (31-37) sts. Work 1 row.
Cast off 3 sts beg next 4 rows. Leave rem 17 (19-25) sts on a st holder.

FRONT
Work from ** to ** as given for Back.
With MC, work 3 rows even.
Divide for placket opening: Next row: (WS). With MC, work 2tog. Pat across 16 (18-21) sts (placket edge). Turn. Leave rem sts on a spare needle.
Cont in pat dec 1 st at side edge on following 4th row once more, then on alt rows 1(2-2) time(s) more. 14 (16-18) sts.
Work 1 row even in pat.

Shape neck: Next row: (WS). Work 2tog. Pat across 8 sts. Turn. Leave rem 4 (6-8) sts on a st holder.
Work 1 row even in pat.
Next row: Dec 1 st each end of row.
Work 1 row even in pat.
Next row: Cast off 3 sts. Pat to last 2 sts. Work 2tog.
Work 1 row even in pat.
Cast off rem 3 sts.
With WS of work facing, slip center 3 sts onto a safety pin. Join MC to next st. Pat to last 2 sts. Work 2tog.
Cont in pat, dec 1 st at side edge on following 4th rows twice more, then on alt row once. 14 (16- 18) sts.
Work 1 row even in pat.

Shape neck: Next row: (WS). Slip first 4 (6-8) sts onto a st holder. Rejoin MC and pat to last 2 sts. Work 2tog.
Work 1 row even in pat.
Next row: Dec 1 st each end of row.
Work 1 row even in pat.
Next row: Work 2tog. Pat to end of row.
Next row: Cast off 3 sts. Pat to end of row.
Next row: Pat to end of row.
Cast off rem 3 sts.

Right Placket: With RS facing and smaller needles, join MC to 3 sts on safety pin. Work in garter st (knit every row) until work measures length to fit up placket opening edge to neck edge ending with RS facing for next row and sewing in position as you work. Leave these sts on a safety pin.
Left Placket:With RS facing, MC and smaller needles, pick up and knit 3 sts across bottom of inner edge of Right Placket. Work as for Right Placket.
Sew side seams.

Collar: With RS facing, MC and smaller needles, K3 from Right Placket, K4 (6-8) from right front st holder. Pick up and knit 6 sts up right front neck edge. K17 (19-25) from back st holder dec 2 sts evenly across. Pick up and knit 6 sts down left front neck edge. K4 (6-8) from left front st holder. K3 from Left Placket. 41 (47-57) sts.
Work 4½ ins [11 cm] in garter st ending with WS of Collar facing. Cast off loosely knitwise.
