GAUGE

Hat: 20 sts and 26 rows = 4" [10 cm] with larger needles in stocking st. Mittens: 22 sts and 28 rows = 4" [10 cm] with larger needles in stocking st.

INSTRUCTIONS

Stripe Pat
With A: 4 rnds.
With MC: 4 rnds.
With B: 4 rnds
With MC: 4 rnds.
With C: 4 rnds.
With MC: 4 rnds.
These 24 rnds form Stripe Pat.

With MC and set of 4 smaller doublepointed needles, cast on 80 (84-88-96-104) sts. Divide sts onto 3 needles: 27 (28-29-32-35) on 1st needle, 27 (28-29-32-35) on 2nd needle and 26 (28-30-32-34) on 3rd needle. Join in rnd, placing marker on first st.
1st rnd: *K2. P2. Rep from * around.
Rep last rnd (K2. P2) ribbing until work from beg measures 4 (5-5-6-6)" [10 (12.5-12.5-15-15) cm].

**Change to set of larger double-pointed needles and knit in Stripe Pat until work from beg measures 6½ (7-7½-8-8½)" [16.5 (18-19-20.5-21.5) cm].

RIGHT MITTEN
**With MC and set of 4 smaller doublepointed needles, cast on 28 (32-36-40-48) sts. Divide sts onto 3 needles: 14 (16-18-21-24) sts on 1st needle, 7 (8-9-10-12) sts on 2nd needle and 7 (8-9-11-12) sts on 3rd needle. Join in rnd, placing marker on first st.
1st rnd: *K2. P2. Rep from * around.
Rep last rnd of (K2. P2) ribbing for 1½ (2-2--3)" [4 (5-5-6-7.5) cm].****

Size Lady only: Next rnd: Knit, inc 2 sts evenly around. 42 sts.

All sizes: Change to larger needles and knit 4 (5-6-6-7) rnds in Stripe Pat as given for Hat Version 1.**

Shape thumb gusset: 1st rnd: K15 (17-19-22-25). Inc 1 st in each of next 2 sts. Knit to end of rnd.
2nd and alt rnds: Knit.
3rd rnd: K15 (17-19-22-25). Inc 1 st in next st. K2. Inc 1 st in next st. Knit to end of rnd.
5th rnd: K15 (17-19-22-25). Inc 1 st in next st. K4. Inc 1 st in next st. Knit to end of rnd. 34 (38-42-48-54) sts.
6th rnd: Knit.

Sizes 6/8, 10/12, Lady and Man only: 7th rnd: K(17-19-22-25). Inc 1 st in next st. K6. Inc 1 st in next st. Knit to end of rnd. (40-44-50-56) sts.
