16 sts and 32 rows = 4" [10 cm] in garter st.

INSTRUCTIONS

The instructions are written for smallest size. If changes are necessary  for larger sizes the instructions will be written thus ( ). Numbers for each  size are shown in the same color throughout the pattern. When only one  number is given in black, it applies to all sizes.
 
Note: Cardigan is worked in one piece from cuff to cuff.
 
Beg at Right Sleeve cuff, cast on 30 (32-34-36) sts. Do not join. Working back and forth across needle in rows, proceed as follows:
Knit 9 rows (garter st), noting first row is WS.
Inc 1 st each end of next and every following 8th row until there are 40 (44-48-52) sts. Place a marker at each end of last row.
Cont even until work from beg measures (-8-)" [16.5 (18.5-20.5-24) cm], ending with a WS row. Place a marker at each end of last row.
 
Shape sides: Inc 1 st each end of next 4 rows. 48 (52-56-60) sts.
Cast on 26 (28-30-32) sts beg next 2 rows. 100 (108-116-124) sts.
Work 24 (28-30-34) rows even.
 
Shape Right Front: Next row: (RS). K50 (54-58-62). Turn. Leave rem sts on a spare needle.
Cast off 3 sts beg next row (neck edge) and every following alt row 5 (6-6-7) times more. 32 (33-37-38) sts rem.
Work 1 row even.
Dec 1 st at neck edge on next and every following alt row 3 (2-3-2) times more. 28 (30-33-35) sts rem. Cast off knitwise (WS).Back: With RS facing, join yarn to rem 50 (54-58-62) sts.
Work 40 (40-44-44) rows even. Break yarn.
 
Back: With RS facing, join yarn to rem 50 (54-58-62)sts.

Left Front: Cast on 28 (30-33-35) sts.
Next row:(WS). Knit.

Join Left Front and Back: Next row: (RS).K50 (54-58-62) Left Front sts. K50 (54-58-62) Back sts. 100 (108-116-124)sts.
Work a further 24 (28-30-34)rows even.
 
Shape sides: Cast off 26 (28-30-32)sts beg next 2 rows.48 (52-56-60)sts.
Dec 1 st each end of next 4 rows. 40 (44-48-52)sts. Place a marker at each end oflastrow.
Cont even until work from last set of markers on Left Side measures same lengthas Right Sidebetweenfirst 2 sets ofmarkers(to last sleeve inc).
Dec 1 st each end of next and every following 8th row until there are 30 (32-34-36)sts.
Cont even until Left Sleeve measures same length as Right Sleeve, ending with a RS row.
Cast off knitwise.
 
FINISHING
Sew side and sleeve seams.
Button and Buttonhole Band: With RS facing, pick up and knit 28 (30-33-35) sts evenly up Left Front edge, 22 (24-26-28) sts up Left Front neck edge, 20 (20-22-22) sts across Back neck edge, 22 (24-26-28) sts down Right Front neck edge and 28 (30-33-35) sts down Right Front edge. 120 (128-140-148) sts.1st to 3rd rows: Knit.
 
Boy's Version only: 4th row: (RS). K92 (97-108-112) sts. *Cast off 2 sts. K6 (7-5-6) (including st on needle after cast off). Rep from * 2 (2-3-3) times more. Cast off 2 sts. K2. 4 (4-5-5) buttonholes.
 
Girl's Version only: 4th row: K2. *Cast off 2 sts. K6 (7-5-6) (including st on needle after cast off). Rep from * 2 (2-3-3) times more. Cast off 2 sts.
Knit to end of row. 4 (4-5-5) buttonholes.
 
Both Versions: 5th row: Knit, casting on 2 sts over cast off sts.
