MATERIALS

Bernat Roving (100 g/3.5 oz;109 m/120 yds)
Main Color (MC) Flint (00033) 1
Size 6.5 mm (U.S. 10 1/2) knitting needles or size needed to obtain gauge. Cable needle. 10" [20.5 cm] long piece of matching stronger spun yarn to tie pompom. 12" [30.5 cm] square piece of cardboard. Glue. Scissors.

GAUGE

12 sts and 16 rows = 4" [10 cm] in stocking st.

INSTRUCTIONS

 

Cast on 64 sts.

1st and 2nd rows: Knit.
3rd and 4th rows: *K1. P1. Rep from * to end of row.
Rep last 4 rows of Hurdle Rib twice more, then rep 1st and 2nd rows once more.

Next row: (WS). Purl.
Beg with a knit row, cont in stocking st until work from beg measures 4" [10 cm], ending with a purl row.
Next row: (Inc row). K5. *M1. K2. M1. K3. Rep from * to last 4 sts. M1. K4. 87 sts.
Next row: Purl.

Proceed in pat as follows:
1st row: (RS). K1. *P1. C8F. C8B. Rep from * to last st. K1.
2nd row: P1. (P16. K1) 5 times. P1.
3rd row: K1. (P1. K16) 5 times. K1.
4th to 9th rows: As 2nd and 3rd rows 3 times more.
10th row: P1. (P15. P2tog) 5 times. P1. 82 sts.
11th row: K5. (C8F. C8B) 4 times. C8F. K5.
12th and alt rows: Purl.
13th, 15th, 17th and 19th rows: Knit.
21st row: K1. (C8F. C8B) 5 times. K1.
Work 3 rows in stocking st.

Shape top: 1st row: (RS). (K3. K2tog) 16 times. K2. 66 sts.
2nd and alt rows: Purl.
3rd row: (K2. K2tog) 16 times. K2. 50 sts.
5th row: (K1. K2tog) 16 times. K2. 34 sts.
7th row: (K2tog) 17 times. 17 sts. Break yarn, leaving a long end and draw through rem sts tightly. Fasten securely. Sew back seam, reversing seam for cuff turnback.

Pompom (see template on page 2)
1. Print out 6" [15 cm] template for each disc (make 2 discs). Glue to cardboard. Allow to dry, then cut out along solid and dashed lines.
2. Using matching multi-ply yarn, approx 10" [20.5 cm] long, place between the 2 discs around center cut out and hold discs together.
3. Wrap Bernat Roving yarn around the cardboard template 120 times.
4. Pull stronger multi-ply yarn between the 2 discs and tie very tightly in center.
5. Slip scissors between the 2 discs and cut the wrapped yarn all around the circle.
6. Pull the discs from the yarn. Fluff and trim pompom into smooth round shape.

Sew pompom securely to top of Hat using matching multi-ply yarn.
