One pair size US 8 (5 mm) needles or size to obtain gauge. One pair size US 6 (4mm) needles or Set of 4 double-pointed needles (dpns) size US 6 (4mm). Stitch markers. Stitch holders. Yarn needle.

GAUGE

In Stockinette stitch using size US 8 (5mm) needles, 18 sts and 24 rows = 4"/10cm.

INSTRUCTIONS

PATTERN STITCHES
1 x 1 ribbing (odd number of sts)
RS rows K1, *p1, k1; repeat from * across.
WS rows P1, *k1, p1; repeat from * across.
 
Stockinette st 
Knit on RS, purl on WS rows.
 
BACK
Using smaller needles, CO 59 (63, 67, 71, 75) sts. Work in 1x1 ribbing for 2"/5cm. Change to larger needles. Work in Stockinette st until Back measures 8.5 (9.5, 10, 10.5, 11)"/21.5 (24, 25.5, 26.5, 28)cm from beginning. Place markers at each edge for sleeve placement. Continue until Back measures 14 (15, 16, 17, 18)"/35.5 (38, 40.5, 43, 45.5)cm from beginning. Place all sts on holder for shoulders and Back neck.
 
FRONT
Work same as for Back until Front measures 4 (4.5, 5, 5.5, 6)"/10 (11, 12.5, 14, 15)cm. Begin chart working in intarsia method using separate strands of CC, not carrying yarn across back of work, as follows: 
Next row (RS) K16 (18, 20, 22, 24) sts, work across 27 sts following chart, k16 (18, 20, 22, 24) sts. 
Continue as established until chart is complete. Work even with MC only until Front measures 12 (13, 14, 15, 16)"/30.5 (33, 35.5, 38, 40.5)cm from beginning.
 
Shape neck
Next row (RS) K21 (23, 25, 27, 29) sts, join 2nd ball of MC, k across center 17 sts and place them on a holder, k21 (23, 25, 27, 29) sts. Working both sides at the same time with separate balls of MC, dec 1 st at each neck edge every RS row 5 times. Work even on 16 (18, 20, 22, 24) sts until Front measures same as Back to shoulders.
 
Join shoulders
Using three-needle bind off, join shoulders as follows: Holding Front and Back with RS’s together, put right needle through 1st st on front needle then through 1st st on back needle, knit as usual. Repeat for 2nd st—2 sts now are on right needle.  Lift right-most st over last st knit and off the needle—1 st bound off. Repeat across each shoulder.
 
Neck edging
Using circular or dpns, k27 Back neck sts, pick up and k approximately 10 sts along side neck edge, k17 Front neck sts, pick up and k approximately 10 sts along side neck edge. Join. Knit every round for 1.5"/4cm. BO VERY loosely. Note Edging will roll to the outside.
 
SLEEVES
Using larger needles, pick up and k49 (49, 55, 59, 63) sts between markers. Working in Stockinette st, dec 1 st at each edge every 4th row 9 (9, 11, 11, 13) times. Work even on 31 (31, 33, 37, 37) sts until Sleeve measures 6.5 (8, 9.5, 11, 12)"/16.5 (20.5, 24, 28, 30.5)cm from beginning. Change to smaller needles and work in 1x1 ribbing for 2"/5cm. BO in ribbing.
 
FINISHING
Sew side and underarm seams. Using yarn needle, weave in ends.
