Size 5.5 mm (U.S. 9) knitting needles or size needed to obtain gauge. Complimentary smooth yarn for sewing seams. 4 medium toggles.

GAUGE

16 sts and 24 rows = 4" [10 cm] in stocking st.

INSTRUCTIONS

The instructions are written for smallest size. If changes are necessary for larger sizes the instructions will be written thus ( ).

Note: Jacket is worked in one piece.

Beg at lower Back edge, cast on 38 (40-44-48) sts loosely.

Beg with a knit row, work in stocking st for 5 1/2 (6 1/2-7-8 1/2)" [14 (16.5-18-21.5) cm] total length, ending with a purl row. Place markers at each end of last row.

Shape sleeves: Inc 1 st each end of next 2 rows. 42 (44-48-52) sts. Cast on 12 (14-16-20) sts beg following 2 rows. 66 (72-80-92) sts.

Cont even until work from markers measures 5 (5 1/2-6-6 1/2)" [12.5 (14-15-16.5) cm], ending with a purl row. Place 2nd set of markers at each end of row.

Shape neck opening: Next row: (RS). K23 (26-29-34). Cast off next 20 (20-22-24) sts. K23 (26-29-34).

Left Front: Cont on 23 (26-29-34) sts and work 2 (2-4-6) rows even. Inc 1 st at neck edge on next 5 rows. 28 (31-34-39) sts.

Cast on 7 (7-8-9) sts at neck edge. 35 (38-42-48) sts.

Next row: (WS). Purl to last 2 sts. K2.

Cont even until work from 2nd marked row measures 5 (5 1/2-6-6 1/2)" [12.5 (14-15-16.5) cm], ending with a RS row and working 2 garter sts at front edge.

Shape sleeve: Next row: (WS). Cast off 12 (14-16-20) sts. Purl to last 2 sts. K2. 23 (24-26- 28) sts.

Dec 1 st at sleeve edge of next 2 rows. 21 (22-24-26) sts.

Cont even until work from last dec measures same length as Back to cast on edge, ending with a WS row. Cast off loosely.

With WS facing, join yarn to rem 23 (26-29-34) sts for Right Front. Work as given for Left Front, reversing all shapings. Using complimentary smooth yarn, sew side and sleeve seams.

Toggle loops: (make 4). Cast on 10 sts. Cast off. Fold loops in half and sew in position evenly spaced along edge of Left Front for Boy or Right Front for Girl. Sew toggles to correspond to loops.
