In Stockinette stitch, using US size 8 (5 mm) needles 18 sts and 24 rows= 4"/10 cm

STITCHES USED
Reverse Stockinette stitch (Rev St st)
C14F = slip next 7 sts onto cn and leave at front of work. K7, then k7 from cn.
C14B = slip next 7 sts onto cn and leave at back of work. K7, then k7 from cn.
K2/P2 Ribbing (worked over a multiple of 4 sts, plus 2)
Row 1 (RS): K2, *p2, k2; rep from * to end.
Row 2: P2, *k2, p2; rep from * to end.
Rep these 2 rows for K2/P2 Ribbing.
Cable Panel (worked over 21 sts)
Row 1 (RS): K21.
Row 2 and all WS rows: P21.
Row 3: K7, C14F.
Rows 5, 7, 9, 11 and 13: K21.
Row 15: C14B, k7.
Rows 17, 19, 21 and 23: K21.
Row 24: P21. Rep these 24 rows for Cable Panel.

BACK
With smaller needles, cast on 94 (102, 110, 118, 126) sts.
Work 3 1/2” in K2/P2 Ribbing, ending on a WS row and inc 6 (7, 8, 9, 10) sts evenly across last row – 100 (109, 118, 127, 136) sts.
Change to larger needles.
Row 1 (RS): P22 (27, 29, 34, 36), work row 1 of Cable Panel across next 21 sts, P14 (13, 18, 17, 22), work row 1 of Cable Panel across next 21 sts, p22 (27, 29, 34, 36).
Row 2: K22 (27, 29, 34, 36), work row 2 of Cable Panel across next 21 sts, K14 (13, 18, 17, 22), work row 2 of Cable Panel across next 21 sts, k22 (27, 29, 34, 36).
Cable Panels and Rev St st are now in position.
Work a further 10 rows in pat.
Shape sides: Dec 1 st each end of next and foll 16th row - 96 (105, 114, 123, 132) sts.
Cont even in pat until work from beg meas 18 (18, 18, 17 1/2, 17)”, ending with a WS row.
Shape Armholes: Keeping continuity of pat, bind off 6 (7, 8, 10, 11) sts beg next 2 rows. Dec 1 st each end of every RS row 5 (6, 8, 9, 11) times – 74 (79, 82, 85, 88) sts.
Cont even in pat until armhole meas 8 (8 1/2, 9, 9 1/2, 10)” ending with a WS row.
Shape shoulders: Bind off 10 (11, 11, 12, 12) st beg next 2 rows, then 10 (11, 12, 12, 13) sts beg following 2 rows. Leave rem 34 (35, 36, 37, 38) sts on a st holder.

LEFT FRONT
With smaller needles, cast on 46 (50, 54, 58, 62) sts.
Work 3 1/2” in K2/P2 Ribbing, ending on a WS row and inc 2 (3, 3, 4, 4) sts evenly across last row – 48 (53, 57, 62, 66) sts.
Change to larger needles.
Row 1 (RS): P22 (27, 29, 34, 36), work row 1 of Cable Panel across next 21 sts, P5 (5, 7, 7, 9).
Row 2: K5 (5, 7, 7, 9), work row 2 of Cable Panel across next 21 sts, k22 (27, 29, 34, 36).
Cable Panel and Rev St st is now in position.
Work a further 10 rows in pat.
Shape side: Dec 1 st at beg of next and foll 16th row - 46 (51, 55, 60, 64) sts.
Cont even in pat until work from beg meas 18 (18, 18, 17 1/2, 17)”, ending with a WS row.
Shape Armhole: Keeping continuity of pat, bind off 6 (7, 8, 10, 11) sts beg next row.

Dec 1 st at armhole edge of every RS row 5 (6, 8, 9, 11) times – 35 (38, 39, 41, 42) sts.
Cont even in pat until armhole meas 5 1/2 (6, 6 1/2, 7, 7 1/2)” ending with a RS row.
Shape neck: Next row (WS): Bind off 7 (8, 8, 9, 9) sts, pat to end. Dec 1 st at neck edge on next 4 rows, then on RS rows 4 times more – 20 (22, 23, 24, 25) sts.
Cont even in pat until armhole meas same length as Back to beg of shoulder shaping, ending with a WS row.
Shape shoulder: Bind off 10 (11, 11, 12, 12) sts beg next row. Work 1 row even. Bind off rem 10 (11, 12, 12, 13) sts.

RIGHT FRONT Work from ** to ** as for Left Front.
Row 1 (RS): P5 (5, 7, 7, 9), work row 1 of Cable Panel across next 21 sts, P22 (27, 29, 34, 36).
Row 2: K22 (27, 29, 34, 36), work row 2 of Cable Panel across next 21 sts, k5 (5, 7, 7, 9).
Cable Panel and Rev St st is now in position.
Work as for Left Front, reversing all shapings.

TIE BELT
With smaller needles, cast on 13 sts.
Row 1 (RS): K2, (p1, k1) 5 times, k1.
Row 2: (K1, p1) 6 times, k1.
Rep last 2 rows until belt (when slightly stretched) meas 58 (59, 60, 61, 62)”. Bind off in ribbing.

FINISHING
Sew shoulder seams.
Neckband: With RS facing and smaller needles, pick up and K22 (23, 23, 24, 24) sts up right front neck edge, K34 (35, 36, 37, 38) from back st holder, dec 4 (3, 4, 3, 4) sts evenly across, pick up and K22 (23, 23, 24, 24) sts down left front neck edge – 74 (78, 78, 82, 82) sts.
Beg with Row 2, work 5 1/2” in K2/P2 ribbing.
Bind off in ribbing. Place markers on each side of neckband 2 3/4” from bind off edge for foldline. Buttonhole Band: With RS facing and smaller needles, pick up and K158 (158, 170, 170, 170) sts up right front edge, beg at cast on edge and ending at neckband marker.
Beg on Row 2, work 7 rows in K2/P2 ribbing.
Nest Row (RS)-buttonholes: Rib 1 (1, 3, 3, 3), *bind off 2 sts, rib 15 (15, 16, 16, 16) (including st on needle after bind off); rep from * 8 times more, bind off 2 sts, rib 2 (2, 3, 3, 3).
Next Row: Rib, casting on 2 sts over bound off sts.
Work a further 5 rows in ribbing. Bind off in ribbing.
Button Band: With RS facing and smaller needles, pick up and K158 (158, 170, 170, 170) sts down left front edge, beg at neckband marker and ending at cast on edge. Work as for Buttonhole Band, omitting all references to buttonholes.
Armbands: With RS facing and smaller needles, pick up and K94 (98, 102, 106, 110) sts evenly along armhole edge. Beg on Row 2, work 7 rows in ribbing. Bind off in ribbing.
Sew side seams. Sew on buttons.
Tie Belt Loops: Try on vest and place markers on side seams for tie belt position. With RS facing and crochet hook, join yarn with slip st at marker and work a chain 3” long. Attach to side seam with slip st approx. 2 1/4” below side seam marker. Fasten off securely.
