GAUGE

20 sts and 26 rows = 4 ins [10 cm] in stocking st.

INSTRUCTIONS

 

 

 

Note: Pieces are knit sideways.

FRONT
With MC, cast on 100 sts.
Work 26 rows in stocking st, ending with RS facing for next row.
With A, work 12 rows stocking st.
Next row: (RS). (Drawstring opening). K5. Cast off 5 sts. Knit to end of row.
Next row: P90. Turn. Cast on 5 sts over cast off sts. Turn. P5.
Work 12 rows stocking st ending with RS facing for next row.
With MC, work 26 rows in stocking st.
Cast off.

BACK
Work as given for Front, omitting all reference to Drawstring opening.

FLAP
Stripe Pat

With A, work 6 rows stocking st.
With MC, work 6 rows stocking st.
These 12 rows form stripe pat.
With MC, cast on 20 sts.
1st row: (WS). Knit.
2nd row: Inc 1 st in first st. Knit to last 2 sts. Inc 1 st in next st. K1.
Rep last 2 rows twice more, then 1st row once. 26 sts.
Proceed in stripe pat and cont as follows:
1st row: (RS). K4. Inc 1 st in next st. Knit to last 6 sts. Inc 1 st in next st. K5. 28 sts.
2nd row: K5. Purl to last 5 sts. K5.
3rd row: Knit.
4th row: As 2nd row.
5th and 6th rows: As 3rd and 2nd rows.
Rep 1st to 6th rows 5 times more. 38 sts.
Work 12 rows even in Stripe pat, ending with RS facing for next row. Cast off.

FINISHING
Sew bottom and side seams. Place markers 1 inch [2.5 cm] down from top edge. Fold top of Bag to WS at markers and sew edge in position to form drawstring casing.
Sew cast off edge of Flap to back of Bag 2 ins [5 cm] down from top edge.
Twisted cord short (long): Cut 6 strands of MC 12 (40) ins [30.5 (101.5) cm] long. With all strands tog hold one end and with someone holding other end, twist strands to the right until they begin to curl. Fold the 2 ends tog and tie in a knot so they will not unravel. The strands will now twist themselves tog. Sew Short twisted cord to cast off edge of Flap for hanging loop. Thread Long twisted cord through drawstring casing.
Button loop: With MC, cast on 12 sts.
Cast off. Sew loop to center of cast on edge of Flap. Sew button to correspond to loop.
With B, embroider child's name on center stripe of bag with chain st as illustrated.
