INSTRUCTIONS

Hat
Band of Hat: With set of smaller double-pointed needles and A, cast on 36 sts. Divide sts onto 3 needles. Join in rnd, placing marker on first st.
**1st rnd: *With A, K1. With B, K1. Rep from * around.
2nd rnd: *With B, K1. With A, K1. Rep from * around.
With B, knit 4 rnds.**
Rep from ** to ** substituting B for A and C for B.
Rep from ** to ** substituting C for A and D for B.
Rep from ** to ** substituting D for A and MC for B.
Rep from ** to ** substituting MC for A and A for B.***
Rep from ** to *** 3 times more.
Cast off.
Sew cast on and cast off edges tog to form Band of Hat.
Top of Hat: Beg at seam, with set of smaller double-pointed needles and MC, pick up and knit 80 sts evenly around Band of Hat. Join in rnd, placing marker on first st.
Knit 8 rnds.
Shape top: 1st rnd: *K6. K2tog. Rep from * around. 70 sts.
2nd and alt rnds: Knit.
3rd rnd: *K5. K2tog. Rep from * around. 60 sts.
5th rnd: *K4. K2tog. Rep from * around. 50 sts.
7th rnd: *K3. K2tog. Rep from * around. 40 sts.
9th rnd: *K2. K2tog. Rep from * around. 30 sts.
10th rnd: *K2tog. Rep from * around. 15 sts.
Break yarn, leaving a long end. Thread end through rem sts and draw up firmly. Fasten securely.
Scarf
With set of larger double-pointed needles and A, cast on 48 sts. Divide sts onto 3 needles. Join in rnd, placing marker on first st.
Knit 10 rnds.
**Next rnd: *With A, K1. With B, K1. Rep from * around.
Next rnd: *With B, K1. With A, K1. Rep from * around.
With B, knit 10 rnds.**
Rep from ** to ** substituting B for A and C for B.
Rep from ** to ** substituting C for A and D for B.
Rep from ** to ** substituting D for A and MC for B.
Rep from ** to ** substituting MC for A and A for B.***
Rep from ** to *** 5 times more.
Cast off.
Fringe: Cut lengths of MC, A, B, C and D 12 ins [30.5 cm] long. Take 2 strands of each color tog, fold in half and knot into fringe, through both thicknesses, ¾ ins [2 cm] apart across cast on and cast off edges of Scarf. Trim fringe evenly.
Mittens

With A, work 2 rnds.
With B, work 2 rnds.
With C, work 2 rnds.
With D, work 2 rnds.
With MC, work 2 rnds.
These 10 rnds form Stripe Pat.
Right Mitten
**With set of smaller double-pointed needles and MC, cast on 30 sts. Divide sts onto 3 needles. Join in rnd, placing marker on first st.
1st rnd: *K1. P1. Rep from * around.
Rep last rnd of (K1. P1) ribbing for 2 ins [5 cm].
Change to larger needles, knit 8 rnds in Stripe Pat. **
Keeping cont of Stripe Pat proceed as follows:
Shape thumb gusset: 1st rnd: K15. Inc 1 st in each of next 2 sts. Knit to end of rnd.
2nd and alt rnds: Knit.
3rd rnd: K15. Inc 1 st in next st. K2. Inc 1 st in next st. Knit to end of rnd.
5th rnd: K15. Inc 1 st in next st. K4. Inc 1 st in next st. Knit to end of rnd.
7th rnd: K15. Inc 1 st in next st. K6. Inc 1 st in next st. Knit to end of rnd. 38 sts.
8th rnd: Knit.
9th rnd: K25. Slip last 10 sts onto safety pin (thumb opening). Knit to end of rnd.
10th rnd: Knit, casting on 2 sts over slipped sts. 30 sts.
***Cont in Stripe Pat until work from beg measures 9 ins [23 cm].
Shape top: 1st rnd: (Sl1. K1. psso. K11. K2tog) twice.
2nd rnd: (Sl1. K1. psso. K9. K2tog) twice.
3rd rnd: (Sl1. K1. psso. K7. K2tog) twice.
Dec 4 sts every rnd as before until there are 6 sts. Break yarn leaving a long end.
Thread end through rem 6 sts. Draw up and fasten securely.
Thumb: With MC, K10 from safety pin. Pick up and knit 2 sts at base of thumb. Divide these 12 sts onto 3 needles. Join in rnd. Knit 10 rnds even.
Next rnd: (K2tog) 6 times.
Break yarn leaving a long end. Thread end through rem 6 sts. Draw up and fasten securely.***
LEft Mitten
Work from ** to ** as given for Right Mitten.
Keeping cont of Stripe Pat proceed as follows:
