Abbreviations

Inc1P = Increase 1 stitch purlwise in next stitch by purling into back and front of stitch.

Inc(s) = Increase 1 stitch by knitting into front and back of next stitch.

K = knit

k2tog = Knit next 2 stitches together.

P = purl

P2tog = purl two stitches together

pat = pattern

psso = pass slipped stitch over

yfwd = yarn forward (makes 1 extra stitch)

Size 3 3/4 mm (U.S. 5) circular knitting needle 36 ins [90 cm] long or size needed to obtain tension.

GAUGE

20 sts and 26 rows = 4 ins [10 cm] with larger needles in stocking st.

INSTRUCTIONS

 

Note: To change colors, twist the two colors around each other where they meet, on wrong side, to avoid a hole.

Strip (make 7)
With MC and larger needles cast on 19 sts, with A cast on 19 sts. 38sts.
1st row: (Wrong side). With A, K19. With MC, K19.
2nd row:With MC, K1. Inc1. K15. K2tog. With A, Sl1. K1. psso. Knit to last 3 sts. Inc 1. K2.
3rd row: As 1st row.
4th row:With MC, K1. (yfwd. K2tog) 9 times. With A, Sl1. K1. psso. (yfwd. K2tog) 8 times. yfwd. K1.
5th, 7th, 9th and 11th rows:With A, P19. With MC, P19.
6th, 8th, 10th and 12th rows: With MC, P1. Inc1P. P15. P2tog. With A, P2tog. Purl to last 3 sts. Inc1P. P1.

These 48 rows complete one pat.
Rep these 48 rows 7 times more, then work 1st to 3rd rows once more. Cast off.

FINISHING
Sew strips tog.
Side edging:With MC, smaller circular needles and right side of work facing pick up and knit 276 sts along side edge.
Work 3 rows in garter st (knit every row). Cast off.
Tassels: (make 14) Cut a piece of cardboard 6 ins [15 cm] wide. Wind MC around cardboard 15 times. Break yarn, then wind Contrast A around cardboard 15 times. Break yarn leaving a long end and thread end through a needle. Slip needle through all loops of MC and Contrast A and tie tightly. Remove cardboard and wind yarn tightly around loops ¾ inch [2 cm] below fold. Fasten securely. Cut through rem loops and trim ends evenly. Sew tassels to points along cast on and cast off edges as illustrated.
