Sizes 3.5 mm (U.S. 4) and 4 mm (U.S. 6) knitting needles or size needed to obtain gauge. 4 stitch holders. 4 buttons.

GAUGE

22 sts and 28 rows = 4" [10 cm] with larger needles in stocking st.

INSTRUCTIONS

The instructions are written for smallest size. If changes are necessary for larger sizes the instructions will be written thus ( ). Numbers for each size are shown in the same color throughout the pattern. When only one number is given in black, it applies to all sizes.
STRIPE PAT A
1st to 6th rows: With A, beg with a knit row, work in stocking st.
7th to 12th rows: With MC, beg with a knit row, work in stocking st.
These 12 rows form Stripe Pat A.

STRIPE PAT B
1st to 6th rows: With B, beg with a knit row, work in stocking st.
7th to 12th rows: With MC, beg with a knit row, work in stocking st.
These 12 rows form Stripe Pat B.

BACK: **With MC and smaller needles, cast on 70 (74-78-86) sts.
1st row: (RS). *K2. P2. Rep from * to last 2 sts. K2.
2nd row: *P2. K2. Rep from * to last 2 sts. P2.
Rep last 2 rows (K2. P2) ribbing for 2" [5 cm], ending with a 2nd row and inc 1 (1-3-3) st(s) evenly across last row. 71 (75-81-89) sts.

Change to larger needles and proceed in Stripe Pat A until work from beg measures approx 8 3/4 (10 1/2-10 1/2-12 1/2)" [22 (26.5-26.5-32) cm], ending on a 12th row of pat.

Proceed in Stripe Pat B for 2 (2-8-4) rows.

Shape armholes: Keeping cont of Stripe Pat B, cast off 4 (4-4-6) sts beg next 2 rows. 63 (67-73-77) sts.
Next row: (RS). K1. K2tog. Pat to last 3 sts. ssk. K1.
Next row: Work even in pat.
Rep last 2 rows 2 (2-2-3) times more. 57 (61-67-69) sts.**

Cont even in Stripe Pat B until armhole measures 5 (5 1/2-6 1/4-7)" [12.5 (14-16-18) cm], ending with a RS row. Break B.
Next row: (WS). With MC, purl, inc 1 (1-3-1) st(s) evenly across. 58 (62-70-70) sts.
Change to smaller needles and work 8 rows in (K2. P2) ribbing, ending on a WS row. Cast off in ribbing.

FRONT
Work from ** to ** as given for Back.
Cont even in Stripe Pat B until armhole measures 3 1/2 (4-4 3/4-5 1/2)" [9 (10-12-14) cm], ending with a WS row.

Shape neck: Next row: (RS). K11 (13-15-15) (neck edge). Turn. Leave rem sts on a spare needle.
Keeping cont of Stripe Pat B, dec 1 st at neck edge on next 5 rows. 6 (8-10-10) sts.
Work 2 rows even. Leave rem sts on a st holder.

With RS facing, slip center 35 (35-37-39) sts onto a st holder. Rejoin appropriate yarn to rem sts and knit to end of row.
Keeping cont of Stripe Pat B, dec 1 st at neck edge on next 5 rows. 6 (8-10-10) sts.
Work 2 rows even. Leave rem sts on a st holder.

SLEEVES
With MC and smaller needles, cast on 38 (38-42-42) sts.
Work 2" [5 cm] in (K2. P2) ribbing as given for Back, ending on a 2nd row and inc 3 (3-3-5) sts evenly across last row. 41 (41-45-47) sts.

Change to larger needles and proceed in Stripe Pat A for 6 (6-4-4) rows.
Keeping cont of pat, inc 1 st each end of next row and following 8th rows until there are 51 (55-63-67) sts.
Cont even in pat until work from beg measures 9 (11-13-15 1/2)" [23 (28-33-39.5) cm], ending with a WS row.

Shape top: Keeping cont of pat, cast off 4 (4-4-6) sts beg next 2 rows. 43 (47-55-55) sts.
Next row: (RS). K1. K2tog. Pat to last 3 sts. ssk. K1.
Next row: Work even in pat.
Rep last 2 rows 5 (5-4-8) times more. 31 (35-45-37) sts.
Next row: (RS). K1. K2tog. Pat to last 3 sts. ssk. K1.
Next row: P1. P2togtbl. Pat to last 3 sts. P2tog. P1.

FINISHING
Front Neckband: With RS facing, MC and smaller needles, K6 (8-10-10) from left shoulder st holder. Pick up and knit 7 sts down left front neck edge. K35 (35-37-39) from Front st holder, inc 1 (1-3-1) st(s) evenly across. Pick up and knit 7 sts up right front neck edge. K6 (8-10-10) from right shoulder st holder. 62 (66-74-74) sts. Beg on a 2nd row, work 3 rows in (K2. P2) ribbing as given for Back.
Next row (buttonholes): Rib across 2 sts. yo. ssk. Rib across 3 (3-4-5) sts. yo. ssk. Rib to last 9 (9-10-11) sts. K2tog. yo. Rib across 3 (3-4-5) sts. K2tog. yo. Rib across last 2 sts.
Work a further 3 rows in ribbing. Cast off in ribbing.

Layer Front Neckband over Back at armhole edge and sew sides tog. Sew in Sleeves. Sew side and sleeve seams. Sew buttons on Back shoulders to correspond to buttonholes.
