Sets of four sizes 3.5 mm (U.S. 4) and 3.75 mm (U.S. 5) double-pointed knitting needles. Sizes 3.5 mm (U.S. 4) and 3.75 mm (U.S. 5) circular knitting needles 24" [60 cm] long or size needed to obtain gauge. Length of 3/4" [2 cm] wide elastic to fit waist measurement.

GAUGE

23 sts and 30 rows = 4" [10 cm] with larger needles in stocking stitch.

INSTRUCTIONS

The instructions are written for smallest size. If changes are necessary for larger sizes the instructions will be written thus ( ). When only one number is given, it applies to all sizes. For ease in working, circle all numbers pertaining to your size.

Stripe Pat A
With A, knit 4 rnds.
With B, knit 1 rnd.
These 5 rnds form Stripe Pat A.

Stripe Pat B
With A, knit 1 rnd.
With B, knit 4 rnds.
These 5 rnds form Stripe Pat B.

Stripe Pat C
With A, knit 5 rnds.
With B, knit 5 rnds.
These 10 rnds form Stripe Pat C.

RIGHT LEG
**With B and set of smaller double-pointed needles, cast on 48 (50-52-54) sts. Divide sts onto 3 needles: 16 (16-18-18) sts on 1st and 2nd needles. 16 (18-16-18) sts on 3rd needle. Join in rnd, placing marker on first st.
1st rnd: *K1. P1. Rep from * around. Rep last rnd (K1. P1) ribbing for 1 3/4" [4.5 cm], inc 2 sts
evenly around last rnd. 50 (52-54-56) sts.**

Change to larger double-pointed needles and beg with A, knit in Stripe Pat A, inc 1 st at beg and end of next and every following 4th (4th-4th-6th) rnd until there are 66 (64-62-70) sts, then every following 6th (6th-6th-8th) rnd until there are 68 (70-74-76) sts. Inc 1 st at beg and end of next 4 rnds. 76 (78-82-84) sts. Cont even in Stripe Pat A until work from beg measures 8 (8 3/4-10 1/4-12)" [20.5 (22-26-30.5) cm]. Break A and B.

LEFT LEG
With A, work from ** to ** as given for Right Leg.

Cont as given for Right Leg, substituting Stripe Pat B for Stripe Pat A. Do not break A and B.

Joining legs: With A and larger circular needle, K76 (78-82-84) from Right Leg. K76 (78-82-84) from Left Leg. Join in rnd, placing marker on first st. 152 (156-164-168) sts.
1st rnd: With A, [K2tog. K72 (74-78-80). ssk. Place marker] twice. 148 (152-160-164) sts.
2nd to 4th rnds: (K2tog. Knit to 2 sts before marker. ssk) twice.
5th rnd: With B as 2nd rnd.
6th rnd: With B, knit.
7th and 8th rnds: As 5th and 6th rnds.
9th rnd: With B, as 2nd rnd. 124 (128-136-140) sts. Place marker at end of rnd.

With A, knit 4 rnds even.
Next rnd: With A, as 2nd rnd. 120 (124-132-136) sts.
With B, knit 4 rnds even.
Next rnd: With B, as 2nd rnd. 116 (120-128-132) sts.

Shape back: Next row: (RS). K29 (30-32-33). Turn.
Next row: P54 (56-60-62). Turn.

Next row: K42 (44-48-50). Turn.
Next row: P38 (40-44-46). Turn.
Next row: K34 (36-40-42). Turn.
Next row: P30 (32-36-38). Turn. Break B.
Next row: With A, knit across all sts. Join in rnd.

Change to smaller circular needle and, knit 10 rnds.
Next rnd: (Fold line). Purl.
Knit 10 rnds. Cast off.

FINISHING
Fold waistband along fold line to WS and sew in position, leaving an opening to insert elastic. Cut elastic to waist measurements and draw through waistband. Sew ends of elastic tog. Sew opening closed.
