36 sts and 48 rows = 4 ins [10 cm] in stocking st.

INSTRUCTIONS

The instructions arewritten for smallest size. If changes are necessary for larger sizes the instructions will be written thus ( ).
Contrast Heel and Toe Version
With A, cast on 68 sts loosely. Divide into 17, 34 and 17 sts on 3 needles. Join in rnd placing a marker on first st.Work in (K1. P1) ribbing for 4 ins [10 cm]. Break A.
Change to MC and proceed in stocking st (knit every rnd) until work from beg measures 11½ ins [29 cm]. Do not break MC.
Make heel: Divide 34 sts on 2nd needle onto 2 needles and leave for instep. Knit 17 sts off first needle onto end of third needle. 34 sts for heel.
Change to B and proceed as follows:
Next row: (WS). P33. Turn.
Next row: K32. Turn.
Next row: P31. Turn.
Cont in this manner working stocking st back and forth across 3rd needle, having 1 st less at end of every row until 12 sts rem.
Place a marker at end of row.
Next row: Sl1P. P12. Turn.
Next row: Sl1K. K13. Turn.
Next row: Sl1P. P14. Turn.
Cont in this manner, slipping first st of each row and having 1 st more at end of every row until all 34 sts have been worked.
Return 34 instep sts to 2nd needle. Slip last 17 sts from end of 3rd needle onto spare needle. 3rd needle now becomes 1st needle and spare needle now becomes 3rd needle. Knit across all sts on 2nd and 3rd needles. 17, 34, 17 sts. Break B.
With MC, cont even in rnds until foot from marked row measures 5½(6-7) ins [14 (15- 18) cm]. Break MC.
Change to A.
Shape Toe: 1st rnd: 1st needle: Knit to last 3 sts. K2tog. K1. 2nd needle: K1. Sl1K. K1. psso. Knit to last 3 sts. K2tog. K1. 3rd needle: K1. Sl1K. K1. psso. Knit to end of needle.
2nd rnd: Knit.
Rep last 2 rnds until there are 20 sts divided as 5 sts on first needle, 10 sts on second needle and 5 sts on third needle. Slip sts from first needle onto third needle. Graft 2 sets of 10 sts tog for toe.
