Classic Pleated Tea Cozy

This clever tea cozy uses stranded colorwork in an unusual way: by intentionally pulling the alternate shade too tight, you create pleats! Top off any one of the three suggested shade combinations with a fun pom-pom.

INSTRUCTIONS

The instructions are written for smallest size. If changes are necessary for larger sizes the instructions will be written thus ( ). Numbers for each size are shown in the same color throughout the pattern. When only one number is given in black, it applies to all sizes.

Note: Length of yarn passed behind knit sts should be approx 1" [2.5 cm] long. This will draw in the work and create the pleated effect.

Make 2 pieces alike.
With B, cast on 53 (67-81) sts.
1st row: (WS). Knit.
2nd row: K2. *With A, K7. Pass B over A. With B, K7. Pass A over B. Rep from * to last 9 sts. With A, K7, pass B over A. With B, K2.
3rd row: With B, K2. Bring B to front of work and pass over A. Bring A to back. *With A, K7. Bring A to front of work. Pass B over A to back. With B, K7. Rep from * to last 9 sts. Bring A to back. With A, K7. Bring A to front of work. Pass B over A to back. With B, K2.
4th row: With B, K2. Pass A under B and rep from * as given for 2nd row.
Rep 3rd and 4th rows until work from beg measures 4 (5-6)" [10 (12.5-15)" cm], ending on a 3rd row.

Shape top: 1st row: (RS). With B, K2. *With A, K2. K2tog. K3. Pass B over A. With B, K2. K2tog. K3. Pass A over B. Rep from * to last 9 sts. With A, K2. K2tog. K3, pass B over A. With B, K2. 46 (58-70) sts rem.
2nd to 4th rows: Work even in pat.
5th row: With B, K2. *With A, K2. K2tog. K2. Pass B over A. With B, K2. K2tog. K2. Pass A over B. Rep from * to last 8 sts. With A, K2. K2tog. K2, pass B over A. With B, K2. 39 (49-59) sts rem.
6th to 8th rows: Work even in pat.
9th row: With B, K2. *With A, K1. K2tog. K2. Pass B over A. With B, K1. K2tog. K2. Pass A over B. Rep from * to last 7 sts. With A, K1. K2tog. K2, pass B over A. With B, K2. 32 (40-48) sts rem.
10th row: Work even in pat.
11th row: With B, K2. *With A, K1. K2tog. K1. Pass B over A. With B, K1. K2tog. K1. Pass A over B. Rep from * to last 6 sts. With A, K1. K2tog. K1, pass B over A. With B, K2. 25 (31-37) sts rem.
12th row: Work even in pat.
13th row: With B, K2tog. *With A, K3tog. With B, K3tog.
Rep from * to last 5 sts. With A, K3tog. With B, K2tog. 9 (11-13) sts rem.
Break yarn, leaving a length of B. Thread B through rem sts. Draw up and fasten securely.

FINISHING
Pom-pom: Holding A and B tog, wind yarn around 3 fingers approx 50 times. Remove from fingers and tie tightly in center. Cut through each side of loops. Trim to a smooth round shape.
Sew side and top seams, leaving openings for handle and spout. Sew pom-pom to top of Tea Cozy.
