INSTRUCTIONS

The instructions are written for smallest size. If changes are necessary for larger sizes the instructions will be written thus ( ). Numbers for each size are shown in the same color throughout the pattern. When only one number is given in black, it applies to all sizes.

POCKET LININGS (make 2).
With larger needle cast on 22 sts. Do not join. Working back and forth across needle in rows, work 5½ ins [14 cm] in stocking st, ending with a purl row and inc 2 sts evenly across last row. 24 sts. Leave sts on a st holder.

BODY

note: Body is worked in one piece to armholes.

With larger needle, cast on 158 (174-190- 198-230-254) sts. Do not join. Working back and forth across needle in rows, proceed as follows:

1st row: (RS). *K2. P2. Rep from * to last 2 sts. K2.
2nd row: *P2. K2. Rep from * to last 2 sts. P2. Rep last 2 rows (K2. P2) ribbing twice more.

Proceed in pat as follows:
1st row: (RS). Knit.
2nd and alt rows: Purl.
3rd row: K1. *C4F. K4. Rep from * to last 5 sts. C4F. K1.
5th row: Knit.
7th row: K1. *K4. C4B. Rep from * to last 5 sts. K5.
8th row: Purl.

Work 6 ins [15 cm] in (K2. P2) ribbing as given for Body, ending on a 2nd row and inc 4 (4-8-8-8-8) sts evenly across last row. 58 (58-62-62-66-66) sts.
Place markers on side edges 3 ins [7.5 cm] up from cast on edge for cuff turnback. Change to larger needle and proceed in pat as follows:
1st row: (RS). *K3. P1. Rep from * to last 2 sts. K2.
2nd row: *P3. K1. Rep from * to last 2 sts. P2.
Last 2 rows form Rib Pat.

Cont in Rib Pat, inc 1 st each end of next and every following 10th (8th-8th-8th- 10th-10th) row until there are 68 (72- 76-76-78-78) sts, taking inc sts into pat.
Cont even in pat until work from markers measures 17½ (17-16½-16½-16-16) ins [44.5 (43-42-42-40.5-40.5) cm], ending with a WS row. Place markers at each end of last row.
Work 8 (10-12-12-18-20) rows even in pat. Cast off in pat.

FINISHING
Pin all pieces to measurements. Cover with a damp cloth, leaving cloth to dry.
Sew shoulder seams.

HOOD
With larger needle, cast on 98 (98-98-102- 102-102) sts. Do not join. Working back and forth across needle in rows, proceed as follows:
1st row: (RS). *K3. P1. Rep from * to last 2 sts. K2.
2nd row: *P3. K1. Rep from * to last 2 sts. P2.
Last 2 rows form Rib Pat.

Cont in Rib Pat until work from beg measures 8½ (-9-9-9½-9½) ins [21.5 (21.5-23-23- 24-24) cm], ending with a WS row.

Shape back: Keeping cont of pat, cast off 14 (14-14-15-15-15) sts beg next 6 rows. Cast off rem 14 (14-14-12-12-12) sts.
Fold Hood in half and sew back seam.
Sew Hood to neck edge, having Hood seam match center of back neck edge.

Front and hood edging: With RS of work facing and smaller needle, pick up and knit 112 sts up Right Front edge to Hood. Pick up and knit 94 (94-94-98-98-98) sts across Hood edge. Pick up and knit 112 sts down Left Front edge. 318 (318-318-322-322- 322) sts.
Beg on a 2nd row, work 5 rows in (K2. P2) ribbing as given for Body. Cast off in ribbing.

Pocket edging: With RS facing and smaller circular needle, K24 from pocket st holder, inc 2 sts evenly across. 26 sts.
Beg on a 2nd row, work 5 rows in (K2. P2) ribbing as given for Body. Cast off in ribbing.
Sew sides of pocket edging in position on RS. Sew sides of pocket lining in position on WS.

Sew sleeve seams, reversing seam for cuff turnback. Sew in Sleeves placing rows above markers along cast off sts of Back and Fronts to form square armholes. Sew side seams.

Toggle loops: (make 3). Cut 3 strands of yarn 16 ins [40.5 cm] long. Taking all strands tog hold one end and with someone holding other end, twist strands to the right until they begin to curl. Fold the 2 ends tog and tie in a knot so they will not unravel. The strands will now twist themselves together. Adjust length if desired (see Diagram).

Sew toggle loops in position to edge of Right Front, having bottom loop at beg of armhole shaping (where pat changes to rib pat), top loop ½ inch [1 cm] below neck edge and rem loop evenly spaced between. Try on Coat and mark positions for toggle placement (including overlap). Sew toggles in position on Left Front.
