Abbreviations

C4B = Slip next 2 stitches onto cable needle and leave at back of work. K2, then K2 from cable needle

cont = continue(ity)

K = knit

k2tog = Knit next 2 stitches together.

M1 = Make 1 stitch by picking up horizontal loop lying before next stitch and knitting into back of loop.

P = purl

pat = pattern

rep = repeat

RS = right side

ssk = Slip next 2 stitches knitwise one at a time. Pass them back onto left-hand needle, then knit through back loops together.

Size 4.5 mm (U.S. 7) circular knitting needle 40 ins [100 cm] long or size needed to obtain tension. Cable needle.

GAUGE

20 sts and 26 rows = 4 ins [10 cm] in stocking st.

INSTRUCTIONS

With A, cast on 243 sts. Do not join. Working back and forth across needle in rows, proceed as follows:

Knit 2 rows (garter st), noting first row is WS.
Next row: (WS). K12. M1. (K10. M1. K9) 12 times. K3. 256 sts.
Proceed in pat as follows.
1st row: (RS). With B, K5. (yo. K4. K2tog. P1. K4. P1. ssk. K4. yo. K1) 13 times. K4.
2nd row: K5. (P6. K1. P4. K1. P7) 12 times. P6. K1. P4. K1. P6. K5.
3rd and 4th rows: As 1st and 2nd rows.
5th row: K5. (yo. K4. K2tog. P1. C4B. P1. ssk. K4. yo. K1) 13 times. K4.
6th row: As 2nd row.
7th to 18th rows: Rep 1st to 6th rows twice more.
19th and 20th rows: With A, knit 2 rows (garter st).
21st to 38th rows: With C, rep 1st to 6th rows 3 times more.
39th and 40th rows: With A, knit 2 rows (garter st).
41st to 58th rows: With D, rep 1st to 6th rows 3 times more.
