k2tog = Knit next 2 stitches together.

P = purl

P2tog = purl two stitches together

pat = pattern

psso = pass slipped stitch over

rem = remain(ing)

RS = right side

Sl1 = Slip next stitch knitwise.

Sl1P = Slip next stitch purlwise.

ssk = Slip next 2 stitches knitwise one at a time. Pass them back onto left-hand needle, then knit through back loops together.

24 sts and 32 rows = 4" [10 cm] in stocking stitch.

INSTRUCTIONS

The instructions are written for smallest size. If changes are necessary for larger sizes the instructions will be written thus ( ). Numbers for each size are shown in the same color throughout the pattern. When only one number is given in black, it applies to all sizes.

Striped Version
Stripe Pat

With B, knit 4 rnds.
With A, knit 2 rnds.
These 6 rnds form Stripe Pat.

With A, cast on 38 (42-48-48-54) sts. Divide sts onto 3 needles as 12 (14-16-16-18) sts on 1st and 2nd needles and 14 (14-16-16-18) sts on 3rd needle. Join in rnd, placing marker on rst st.
1st rnd: *K1. P1. Rep from * around.
Rep last rnd of (K1. P1) ribbing for 1½ (-2-2-2½)" [4 (4-5-5-6) cm].
Proceed in Stripe Pat until work from beg measures approx 5 (6-7-7-8)" [12.5 (15-18-18-20.5) cm], ending with 2 rows of B.
Break B.

Arrange heel sts:
Slip last 10 (11-12-12-14) sts of 3rd needle and rst 10 (11-12-12-14) sts of rst needle onto needle for heel. Slip rem 18 (20-24-24-26) sts onto st holder for 2nd instep.
With WS of work facing, join A and work back and forth across heel sts on 2 needles as follows:
1st row: Sl1. Purl to end of row.
2nd row: *Sl1P. K1. Rep from * to end of row.
Rep last 2 rows until heel measures 1½ (-2½--2½)" [4 (4.5-6-6-6) cm].

Sizes 2/4 and 6/8 only:
Shape heel: 1st row: Sl1P. P9 (10). P2tog. P1. Turn.
2nd row: Sl1P. K3. ssk. K1. Turn.

3rd row: Sl1P. P4. P2tog. P1. Turn.

With 3rd needle pick up and knit 8 (10-15-15-15) sts along other side of heel. Knit rst 5 (6-7-7-8) sts from 1st needle onto end of 3rd needle. Slip rem 5 (6-7-7-8) sts from heel onto beg of 1st needle. 44 (52-68-68-72) sts are now divided as: 13 (16-22-22-23) sts on 1st and 3rd needles, 18 (20-24-24-26) sts on 2nd needle.
Next rnd: 1st needle: Knit to last 3 sts. K2tog. K1. 2nd needle: Knit. 3rd needle: K1. ssk. Knit to end of needle.
Next rnd: With A, knit.

Keeping cont of Stripe Pat, rep last 2 rnds to 38 (42-48-48-54) sts divided as: 10 (11-12-12-14) sts on 1st and 3rd needles, 18 (20-24-24-26) sts on 2nd needle.

Keeping cont of Stripe Pat, knit in rnds until foot from picked up sts measures approx 4½ (-6--7)" [11.5 (14-15-16.5-18) cm], ending with 4 rows of B. Break B.

Shape toe: With A, 1st rnd: 1st needle: Knit to last 3 sts. K2tog. K1. 2nd needle:K1. ssk. Knit to last 3 sts. K2tog. K1. 3rd needle: K1. ssk. Knit to end of needle.
Next rnd: Knit.
Rep last 2 rnds to 14 (14-16-16-18) sts. Knit sts from 1st needle onto 3rd needle.
Graft 2 sets of 7 (7-8-8-9) sts tog for toe.

Solid Version
Work as for Striped Version, omitting all color changes.
