GAUGE

17 sts and 22 rows = 4 ins [10 cm] in stocking st.

INSTRUCTIONS

The instructions are written for Woman’s size. If changes are necessary for Man’s size the instructions will be written in ( ). Numbers for each size are shown in the same color throughout the pattern. When only one number is given in black, it applies to both sizes.

Notes: Hat is worked in spiral. Do not join at end of rnds.
Move marker up at end of each rnd.
Hat will be larger than needed until Decorative Top sts are worked into hat.

With MC, ch 4. Join with sl st to first ch to form a ring.
1st rnd: Ch 1. (4 sc. 4 hdc. 4 dc) in ring. PM. Do not join. 12 sts.
2nd rnd: (2 dc in next st) 12 times. PM. Do not join. 24 dc.
3rd rnd: (1 dc in next dc. 2 dc in next dc) 12 times. PM. Do not join. 36 dc.
4th rnd: (1 dc in each of next 2 dc. 2 dc in next dc) 12 times. PM. Do not join. 48 dc.
5th rnd: (1 dc in each of next 3 dc. 2 dc in next dc) 12 times. PM. Do not join. 60 dc.
6th rnd: (1 dc in each of next 9 dc. 2 dc in next dc) 6 times. PM. Do not join. 66 dc.
7th rnd: (1 dc in each of next 10 dc. 2 dc in next dc) 6 times. PM. Do not join. 72 dc.

Man’s size only: Next rnd: (1 dc in each of next 11 dc. 2 dc in next dc) 6 times. PM. Do not join. 78 dc.

Both sizes: Next rnd: 1 dc in each dc around. PM. Do not join. Rep last rnd 4 times more.
Next rnd: 1 hdc in each of next 4 dc. 1 sc in each of next 3 dc. Sl st in next dc. Fasten off. Leave rem sts unworked.

Decorative Top Stitch: With RS of Hat facing, join A (MC) with sl st around post of first sc.
1st rnd: Sl st around post of next 3 sc. 1 sc around post of next 4 hdc. 1 sc around post of next 4 dc.
2nd rnd: 1 sc around post of next 24 dc. Cont working 1 sc around post of each dc until last rnd.
Last rnd: 1 sc around post of next 4 hdc. 1 sc around post of next 3 sc. Sl st in each of next 3 sts. Fasten off.
