INSTRUCTIONS

SPECIAL TERMS
Fhdc: Foundation half double crochet (This technique creates a foundation chain and a row of half double crochet stitches in one)—
Step 1: Place a slip knot on hook, ch 3, insert hook in second ch from hook and draw up a loop, insert hook in 3rd ch from hook and draw up a loop; yarn over and draw through one loop on hook (the "chain"); yarn over and draw through 3 loops on hook (the "half double crochet").
Step 2: The following stitch is worked under the forward 2 loops of the stem of the previous stitch (into the "chain"). Yarn over, insert hook into the face of the "chain" and under the nub at the back of the "chain", draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through one loop on hook (the "chain"), yarn over and draw through 3 loops on hook (the "half double crochet"). Repeat for the length of foundation.

beg-hdc: Beginning half double crochet—Ch 2, insert hook in 2nd ch from hook and draw up a loop, insert hook in front loop only of first hdc and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.
hdc2tog: Half double crochet 2 together—Yarn over, insert hook in next stitch and draw up a loop, (3 loops on hook); yarn over, insert hook in next stitch and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through all 4 loops on hook.

PATTERN ROWS (for shaping)
Even Row: Beg-hdc, working in front loops only, hdc in each st across, turn.
Increase Row: Beg-hdc, working in front loops only, 2 hdc in next st, hdc in each st to last 2 sts, 2 hdc in next st, hdc in last st, turn—2 sts increased.
Decrease Row: Beg-hdc, working in front loops only, hdc2tog, hdc in each st to last 3 sts, hdc2tog, hdc in last st, turn—2 sts decreased.

NOTES
1. The first Fhdc or beg-hdc worked is "linked" to the beginning ch to prevent a hole at the beginning of the row. The link is formed by inserting the hook into the 2nd ch from the hook and drawing up a loop. In addition to linking the first st to the beginning ch, this loop serves as the first yarn over of the Fhdc or beg-hdc,
2. All hdc are worked through the front loops only throughout.
3. When increasing and decreasing, one stitch is allowed at the ends of rows. The increase and decrease shaping are worked to the inside of this edge stitch.
4. The body is constructed of 5 kites and 4 triangles. Each sleeve is constructed of 2 wedges and 1 triangle. Make all pieces first then assemble as you work the edging.

SLEEVES
Note: Sleeve wedges are shaped differently on each edge. At the inner edge (where sleeve meets body and goes down the inside of the arm), the first 16 (18, 19, 21) rows are shaped the same as the body kites, and the rest of the inner sleeve edge is worked even. At the outer edge (where sleeve meets the other sleeve wedge at the shoulder and meets the sleeve triangles down the outside of the arm), the shoulder is shaped with a gentler slope, then the rest of the outer sleeve edge is decreased to correspond to the sleeve triangle.

ASSEMBLY
Using yarn needle, weave in ends.
Notes: Each piece is now finished with a round of (sc, ch 1) edging, worked with C, and joined as you go to form the jacket. The pieces have no obvious RS or WS. All edging is worked on the RS of the work. The body kites and body triangles are interchangeable. Two of the sleeve wedges should be purposefully flipped over to reverse the shaping. You can put it all together any way you please. The designer recommends assembling in stages, as follows and detailed in assembly steps:
1.  First assemble all pieces that go around at the neckline: one body kite for front, two paired sleeve wedges, two body kites for back, two paired sleeve wedges, one body kite for other front (assembly steps #1–#8).
2. Fill in the rest of the body: one body triangle at lower front, (body triangle, kite, body triangle) all at center back, and one body triangle at other lower front (assembly steps #9–#13).
3. Fill in sleeves: one sleeve triangle inserted in each sleeve (assembly steps #14 and #15).
4. Finally, attach collar (assembly step #16).
Tip: For a neater finish, make sc by inserting hook under 2 strands at the center of each row edge each time.
To work edge-join: After working an sc in working piece, slip st in corresponding ch-1 space in previous piece, continue with edging on working piece.
Kite Edging
Round 1: Join C with slip st in first foundation ch, ch 1, sc in same ch, [ch 1, skip next ch, sc in next ch] across, end with ch 1, sc in last ch of foundation; pivot to work along next side of kite, ch 1 (or edge-join) for corner, sc in edge of Fhdc row, *[ch 1 (or edge-join), sc in edge of next row] to underarm marker, ch 1 (or edge-join), [sc, ch 1 (or edge-join), sc] in marked row edge, move marker up to ch-1 space, *continue with edge as established to sc row at point; ch 1 (or edge-join), [sc, ch 1 (or edge-join, sc] in sc at point; pivot to work along next side of kite; repeat from * to *, continue with edge as established, end with sc in edge of Fhdc row, ch 1 (or edge-join) for corner; join with slip st in first sc.
