INSTRUCTIONS

SPECIAL STITCHES

Beg PV-shell: Beginning picot vertical shell—Ch 7, sl st in 3rd ch from hook, [insert hook in next ch and draw up a loop] 4 times (5 loops on hook), insert hook in next sc and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through all 6 loops on hook.

Beg V-shell: Beginning vertical shell—Ch 5, insert hook in 2nd ch from hook and draw up a loop (2 loops on hook), [insert hook in next ch and draw up a loop] 3 times (5 loops on hook), insert hook in next sc and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through all 6 loops on hook.

V-shell: Vertical shell—Ch 3, insert hook in 2nd ch from hook and draw up a loop (2 loops on hook), insert hook in next ch and draw up a loop (3 loops on hook), insert hook in center space of previous V-shell and draw up a loop (4 loops on hook), insert hook under front strand of anchor stitch of previous V-shell and draw up a loop (5 loops on hook), insert hook in designated location and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through all 6 loops on hook. Notes: The "center space" of a V-shell is formed only when the next V-shell is started. It is a strand of yarn running up the left side (if you are right-handed) of the V-shell that 'closes' the shell, and is formed by the working yarn when the first ch of the next shell or a final closing ch-1 is worked. The "anchor stitch" of a V-shell is the strand of yarn formed when the last loop is drawn up (just before the yarn over and through 6 loops in worked). The "designated location" will be specified in each row instruction as needed.

PV-shell: Picot vertical shell—Ch 5, sl st in 3rd ch from hook, [insert hook in next ch and draw up a loop] 2 times (3 loops on hook), insert hook in center space of previous V-shell and draw up a loop (4 loops on hook), insert hook under front strand of anchor stitch of previous V-shell and draw up a loop (5 loops on hook), insert hook in designated location and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through all 6 loops on hook.

NOTE

Shawl is worked back and forth in rows, beginning at center back neck.
