INSTRUCTIONS

HER INFINITY SCARF

SPECIAL STITCHES

  • Fhdc: Foundation half double crochet (This technique creates a foundation chain and a row of half double crochet stitches in one) –
Step 1: Place a slip knot on hook, ch 3, yarn over, insert hook in 3rd ch from hook and draw up a loop; yarn over and draw through one loop on hook (the "chain"); yarn over and draw through 3 loops on hook (the "half double crochet").
Step 2: Yarn over, insert hook into the "chain" of the previous stitch and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through one loop on hook (the "chain"), yarn over and draw through 3 loops on hook (the "half double crochet"). Repeat step 2 for the length of foundation.

NOTES

  1. To change color, work last stitch of old color to last yarn over. Yarn over with new color and draw through all loops on hook to complete stitch. Proceed with new color.
  2. Designer recommends fastening off A, after changing from A to B. After changing from B to A, you do not need to fasten off B. Carry B up inside of piece until next needed.
  3. Scarf is worked in joined rounds. Join last stitch of each round to first stitch of round. Turn work at the ends of Rounds 1–4, but do not turn work at the end of Round 5.

 SCARF

Note: If you prefer to begin scarf with a traditional foundation chain, work as follows: Ch 153; taking care not to twist ch; join with sl st in first ch.  Round 1: Ch 1, hdc in same ch as join, hdc in each remaining ch around; join with sl st in first hdc, turn—153 sts. Then proceed to Round 2 of instructions.
Round 1: With A and leaving an 8"/20.5cm tail, Fhdc 153; taking care not to twist sts, join with sl st in top of first Fhdc to form a ring, turn—153 sts.
Round 2: Ch 1, hdc in each st around; join with sl st in first hdc and change to B, turn. Fasten off A.
Round 3: With B, ch 2, insert hook in 2nd ch from hook and draw up a loop, insert hook in same st as join and draw up a loop (3 loops on hook), [insert hook in next st and draw up a loop] 2 times (5 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through all 5 loops on hook, *ch 1 (eyelet cluster completed, ch-1 forms the eyelet), insert hook in eyelet just made and draw up a loop, insert hook in same st as last loop of previous eyelet cluster and draw up a loop, [insert hook in next st and draw up a loop] 2 times (5 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through all 5 loops on hook; repeat from * around; join with sl st in top of beginning ch (final eyelet cluster completed), turn—76 eyelet clusters.
Round 4: Ch 2 (counts as first hdc), 2 hdc in first eyelet (created by join), 2 hdc in each remaining eyelet around; join with sl st in top of beginning ch and change to A, turn—153 sts. Drop, but do not cut B.
Round 5: With A, ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in each st around; join with sl st in top of beginning ch and change to B, DO NOT TURN. Fasten off A.
Rounds 6–8: Repeat Rounds 3–5.
Rounds 9 and 10: Repeat Round 3 and 4. Fasten off B.
Rounds 11 and 12: With A, ch 1, hdc in each st around; join with sl st in top of first hdc, turn.
Fasten off.

FINISHING

With beginning tail, sew together first and last hdc of first round. Using yarn needle, weave in all ends.

HIS FRINGED SCARF

SPECIAL TECHNIQUE

  • Tunisian Crochet: Each row of Tunisian crochet is worked in two steps, a forward pass and a return pass. The forward pass is worked from right to left, and the return pass is worked from left to right. Different Tunisian stitches (Tss, ExTss) are created while working the forward pass. The return pass is worked in the same manner for all stitches
  • Forward Pass:
Tunisian Simple Stitch (Tss)—Insert hook under next vertical bar, yarn over and draw up a loop.
Extended Tunisian Simple Stitch (ExTss)—Insert hook under next vertical bar, yarn over and draw up a loop, ch 1.
  • Return Pass: Yarn over and draw through first loop on hook, *yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook; repeat from * across.

NOTES

  1. Scarf is worked vertically.
  2. Leave 10"/25.5cm yarn tails when changing colors, to be worked into fringe later.
  3. Scarf is a combination of Tunisian crochet and standard crochet.
  4. In Tunisian crochet, the RS of the work is always facing you; do not turn at the ends of passes.
  5. Skip the first vertical bar (at side edge) in a row (this stitch is already on your hook), unless otherwise instructed.
  6. Always work last stitch of the row under both strands of final vertical bar.
  7. Change color at the end of a return pass, as follows: When only 2 loops remain on hook, yarn over with new color and draw through the final 2 loops.
  8. To change color in standard crochet, work last stitch of old color to last yarn over. Yarn over with new color and draw through all loops on hook to complete stitch. Proceed with new color. Fasten off old color.

FINISHING

Fringe
For each fringe on end of scarf with tails, cut 7 strands of yarn, 20"/51cm long. For each fringe on end of scarf without tails, cut 8 strands of yarn, 20"/51cm long. Hold the 7 or 8 strands together and fold in half, forming a loop at folded end. Draw loop through edge of scarf, thread ends of strands through loop and pull to tighten and secure. Trim ends. Repeat this process to attach fringes across both short ends of scarf, incorporating the tails as needed.
