Size 5 mm (U.S. H-8) crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge. Stitch markers (optional). Yarn needle.

GAUGE

In pattern, 16 sts and 8 rows = 4" [10 cm].

INSTRUCTIONS

Notes: • Throw is made from 5 panels, 3 zig-zag panels and 2 granny square panels. • Zig-zag panels are worked in one piece. A “join-as-you-go" technique is used to join granny squares into strips for granny square panels. • A “join-as-you-go" technique is used to join panels. Panels are joined to previous panels while working panel edging. • To change color, work last stitch of old color to last yarn over. Yarn over with new color and draw through all loops on hook to complete stitch. Proceed with new color. Carry color(s) not in use up side of piece until next needed. Take care to cover carried strands when working edging
FIRST ZIG-ZAG PANEL
With A, ch 152 (See diagram on page 4).
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, *ch 1, sk next ch, sc in next ch; repeat from * across; change to B in last st, turn — 75 ch-1 sps.
Row 2: Ch 3, dc in first ch-1 sp (beginning ch-3 and first dc together counts as first dc2tog), *ch 1, dc2tog working first leg in same ch-1 sp as last st made and 2nd leg in next ch-1 sp (see Special Stitches); repeat from * across to last sc, dc2tog working first leg in same ch-1 sp as last st made and 2nd leg in last sc; change to C in 2nd leg of last dc2tog, turn.
Row 3: Ch 1, sc in first st, *sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1; repeat from * across to last dc, sc in top of turning ch; change to A in last st, turn — 74 ch-1 sps.
Row 4: Ch 3, dc2tog working first leg in first st and 2nd leg in next ch-1 sp, *ch 1, dc2tog working first leg in same ch-1 sp as last st made and 2nd leg in next ch-1 sp; repeat from * across to last 2 sc, dc2tog working first leg in same ch-1 sp as last st made and 2nd leg in last sc; change to B in 2nd leg of last dc2tog, turn.
Row 5: Ch 1, sc in first st, *ch 1, sc in next ch-1 sp; repeat from * across to last st, ch 1, sc in top of turning ch; change to C in last sc, turn.
Row 6: With C, work Row 2; change to A in 2nd leg of last dc2tog.
Row 7: With A, work Row 3; change to B in last st.
Row 8: With B, work Row 4; change to C in last st.
Row 9: With C, work Row 5; change to A in last st.
Row 10: With A, work Row 2; change to B in 2nd leg of last dc2tog.
Row 11: With B, work Row 3; change to C in last st.
Row 12: With C, work Row 4; change to A in last st.
Row 13: With A, work Row 5; change to B in last st.
Rows 14–18: Repeat Rows 2–6. Do not fasten off.
Edging: Round 1: With A, ch 1, 3 sc in first sc (corner made), sc in each st and ch-1 sp across to turning ch (150 sc worked between 3-sc corners), 3 sc in turning ch; work 27 sc evenly spaced across side edge; working across opposite side of foundation ch, 3 sc in first ch, work 150 sc evenly spaced across to last ch, 3 sc in last ch; work 27 sc evenly spaced across side edge; join with sl st in first sc — 366 sc.
Note: The next row is worked across one long edge of the panel only.
Row 2: (Sl st, ch 1, sc) in next sc (center sc of 3-sc corner), [ch 3, sk next 2 sc, sc in next sc, ch 3, sk next 3 sc, sc in next sc] 9 times, [ch 3, sk next 2 sc, sc in next sc] 9 times, [ch 3, sk next 2 sc, sc in next sc, ch 3, sk next 3 sc, sc in next sc] 9 times (working the last sc in the center sc of the next 3-sc corner) — 45 ch-3 sps across top edge of panel. Fasten off.
IRST GRANNY SQUARE PANEL
First Square
With B, ch 8; join with sl st in first ch to form a ring (see diagram on page 4).
Round 1 (RS): Ch 6 (counts as first dc, ch 3), [dc in ring, ch 3] 7 times; join with sl st in 3rd ch of beginning ch — 8 dc and 8 ch-3 sps. Fasten off.
Round 2: With RS facing, join C with sl st in any ch-3 sp, ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), 3 dc in same ch-3 sp, ch 2, [4 dc in next ch-3 sp, ch 2] 7 times; join with sl st in top of beginning ch — Eight 4-dc groups, and 8 ch-2 sps. Fasten off.
Round 3: With RS facing, join B with sl st in any ch-2 sp, ch 3, 5 dc in same ch-2 sp, ch 1, 6 dc in next ch-2 sp, ch 3, [6 dc in next ch-2 sp, ch 1, 6 dc in next ch-2 sp, ch 3] 3 times; join with sl st in top of beginning ch — Eight 6-dc groups, 4 ch-3 sps, and 4 ch-1 sps. Fasten off.
Round 4: With RS facing, join A with sc in any ch-1 sp, ch 3, sc in sp between 3rd and 4th dc of next 6-dc group, ch 3, (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in next ch-3 sp (corner made), [ch 3, sc in sp between 3rd and 4th dc of next 6-dc group, ch 3, sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 3, sc in sp between 3rd and 4th dc of next 6-dc group, ch 3, (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in next ch-3 sp] 3 times, ch 3, sc in sp between 3rd and 4th dc of last 6-dc group, ch 3; join with sl st in first sc — 4 corners; with 4 ch-3 sps, and 3 sc between corners. Do not fasten off.
Round 5: Sl st in next ch-3 sp, ch 3, 2 dc in same ch-3 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-3 sp, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next corner ch-3 sp, [ch 1, *3 dc in next ch-3 sp, ch 1; repeat from * to next corner ch-3 sp, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in corner ch-3 sp] 3 times, ch 1, [3 dc in next ch-3 sp, ch 1] 2 times; join with sl st in top of beginning ch.
Round 6: Ch 1, sc in same st as join, [sc in each dc and ch-1 sp across to next corner ch-2 sp, 2 sc in corner ch-2 sp] 4 times, sc in each dc and ch-1 sp to end of round; join with sl st in first sc — 100 sc.
Notes: • One edge of first granny square is joined to the first 10 ch-sps of top edge of zig-zag panel. Outside edge is worked in solid sc, and remaining un-joined sides are worked in (ch 3, sc) pattern. • Hold first zig-zag panel and first granny square with WS together and RS of granny square facing you.
Round 7 (joining round): Ch 1, sc in same sc as join, sc in next 11 sc; ch 2, drop loop from hook, insert hook from front to back through first ch-3 sp on top edge of zig-zag panel, pick up dropped loop and draw it through (joining-ch-sp made), ch 1, sc in next sc of granny square, work joining-ch-sp in next ch-3 sp of zig-zag panel, sk next 2 sc of granny square, [sc in next sc of granny square, working joining-ch-sp in next ch-3 sp of zig-zag panel, sk next 2 sc of granny square] 7 times, sc in next sc of granny square (this should be the first sc of the next corner), work joining-ch-sp in next ch-3 sp of zig-zag panel, sc in next sc of granny square (joining of granny square to top of zig-zag panel is now complete); working around granny square only, *[ch 3, sk next 2 sc, sc in next sc] 8 times, ch 3, sc in next sc (corner ch-sp made); repeat from * once more, sc in last 12 sc; join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off.
Granny Squares 2–4
Work same as first granny square through Round 6.
Notes: • One edge of granny square is joined to side edge of previous granny square. The next edge of granny square is joined to top edge of zigzag panel in same manner as for first granny square, beginning in same ch-sp of zig-zag panel as last join of previous granny square. Un-joined sides are worked in (ch 3, sc) pattern. • Hold this granny square and the previously joined granny square with WS together and RS of this granny square facing you.

Granny Square 5
Work same as first granny square through Round 6.
Notes: • One edge of granny square is joined to side edge of previous granny square. The next edge of granny square is joined to top edge of zigzag panel in same manner as for first granny square, beginning in same ch-sp of zig-zag panel as last join of previous granny square. Outside edge is worked in solid sc, and remaining un-joined side is worked in (ch 3, sc) pattern. • Hold this granny square and the previously joined granny square with WS together and RS of this granny square facing you.

Work same as zig-zag panel #2 through Round 1 of Edging. Do not work Row 2 of Edging.
FINISHING
Throw Edging
With RS facing, join A with sc in center sc of 3-sc corner to work across top edge of throw.
Round 1 (RS): 2 sc in same corner sc, sc in each sc across to center sc of next 3-sc corner, 3 sc in corner sc; sc in each sc down side of throw, working 2 sc in each corner ch-sp at joins between panels, 3 sc in center sc of next 3-sc corner; sc in each sc across lower edge of throw; sc in each sc up other side of throw, working 2 sc in each corner ch-sp at joins between panels; join with sl st in first sc, do not turn.
Round 2: Ch 1, sc in same sc as join, sc in each sc around, working 3 sc in center sc of each 3-sc corner; join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off.
Round 3: Join B with sc in center sc of 3-sc corner to work across top edge of throw, ch 1, sc in same sc, [ch 1, sk next sc, *sc in next sc, ch 1; repeat from * across to next 3-sc corner, sk next sc, (sc, ch 1, sc) in center sc of corner] 3 times, ch 1, sk next sc, **sc in next sc, ch 1; repeat from ** around; join with sl t in first sc. Fasten off.
Round 4: Join A with sc in ancy corner ch-1 sp, 2 sc in same ch-1 sp, sc in each sc and ch-1 sp around, working 3 sc in each corner ch-1 sp; join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off. Using yarn needle, weave in all ends. Block lightly, if desired.
