Size 5.5 mm (U.S. I or 9) crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge.

GAUGE

12 sc and 13 rows = 4" [10 cm].

INSTRUCTIONS

Beg at bottom, ch 5. Join with sl st to form a ring.
1st rnd: Ch 2. 8 hdc in ring. Join. 8 hdc.
2nd rnd: Ch 2. 2 hdc in each hdc around. Join. 16 hdc.
3rd rnd: Ch 2. *2 hdc in next hdc. 1 hdc in next hdc. Rep from * around. Join. 24 hdc.
4th rnd: Ch 2. *2 hdc in next hdc. 1 hdc in each of next 2 hdc. Rep from * around. Join. 32 hdc.
5th rnd: Ch 2. *2 hdc in next hdc. 1 hdc in each of next 3 hdc. Rep from * around. Join. 40 hdc.
Cont inc 8 sts every rnd evenly spaced (as before) until there are 168 hdc (approx 18" [45.5 cm] diameter).
Next rnd: Ch 3 (counts as dc). Working in front loops only, 1 dc in each hdc around. Join. Place marker.
Next rnd: Ch 1. Working in both loops, 1 sc in each dc around. Join.
Next rnd: Ch 3 (counts as dc). 1 dc in each sc around. Join.
Rep last 2 rnds until work from marker measures 16" [40.5 cm], ending with sc rnd.
Next rnd: (Openings for handles). Ch 3 (counts as dc). 1 dc in next sc. Ch 25. Miss next 24 sc. 1 dc in each of next 60 sc. Ch 25. Miss next 24 sc. 1 dc in each sc to end of rnd. Join.
Next rnd: Ch 1. 1 sc in each st (working 1 sc in each ch) around. 170 sc. Join.
Proceed in Lace Pat as follows:
1st rnd: Ch 1. 1 sc in same sp as sl st. *Ch 1. Miss next sc. 1 sc in next sc. Miss next 3 sc. (3 dc. Ch 1. 3 dc) in next sc – shell made. Miss next 3 sc. 1 sc in next sc. Rep from * around; ending with 1 sc in next sc. Ch 1. Miss last sc. Join.
2nd rnd: Sl st in next ch-1 sp. Ch 3 (counts as hdc and ch 1). 1 hdc in same sp. *Ch 3. 1 sc in top of next Shell. Ch 3. (1 hdc. Ch 1. 1 hdc) in next ch-1 sp – v-st made. Rep from * around. Join to 2nd ch of ch 3.
3rd rnd: Sl st in first ch-1 sp. Ch 3. (2 dc. Ch 1. 3 dc) in same sp. *1 sc in next ch-3 sp. Ch 1. Miss next sc. 1 sc in next ch-3 sp. Shell in next V-st. Rep from * around; ending with 1 sc in next ch-3 sp. Join to top of ch 3.
4th rnd: Sl st in each of next 2 dc and ch-1 sp. Ch 1. 1 sc in same sp. *Ch 3. V-st in next ch-1 sp. Ch 3. 1 sc in top of next Shell. Rep from * around. Join to first sc.
5th rnd: Sl st back in last ch-3 sp. Ch 1. 1 sc in same sp. *Ch 1. Miss next sc. 1 sc in next ch-3 sp. Shell in next V-st. 1 sc in next ch-3 sp. Rep from * around; ending with Shell in last V-st. Join to first sc. Rep 2nd to 5th rnds for 4" [10 cm], ending with 3rd or 5th rnd. Fasten off.
Ties (make 8). Ch 15. Sl st in 2nd ch from hook and each ch to end of chain. Fasten off. Sew 2 ties at each side of openings (see photo).
