Abbreviations

Dc = double crochet

K = knit

k2tog = Knit next 2 stitches together.

sc = single crochet

sp(s) = space(s)

ssk = Slip next 2 stitches knitwise one at a time. Pass them back onto left-hand needle, then knit through back loops together.

st(s) = stitch(es)

yo = yarn over the needle (makes 1 extra stitch)

GAUGE

 

In Garter stitch, 16 sts and 27 rows = 4"/10cm, with US 9 (5.5mm) needles;

In crochet lace pattern, one pattern repeat = 6 1/2"/16.5cm and 6 rows = 3 1/2"/9cm to center point, with US J-10 (6mm) hook.

Gauge is not critical for this project.

INSTRUCTIONS

 

Notes: Crocheted lace adds about 3 1/2"/9cm to length at center point of stitch pattern. All measurements are after blocking.

SHAWL

Body

With knitting needles, cast on 4 sts.

Row 1: Knit.

Row 2 (RS): K2, yo, k2—5 sts. Mark this as RS of piece.

Row 3: Knit.

Row 4: K2, yo, k1, yo, k2—7 sts.

Row 5: Knit.

Row 6: K2, yo, k2, yo, k2tog, k1—8 sts.

Row 7: Knit.

Row 8: K2, yo, k to last 3 sts, yo, k2tog, k1—9 sts.

Repeat last 2 rows until there are 74 sts on needle.

Next Row (WS): Knit.

Next Row (RS): K1, ssk, yo, ssk, k to last 3 sts, yo, k2tog, k1—73 sts.

Repeat last 2 rows until only 7 sts remain.

Next Row (WS): Knit.

Next Row: K1, ssk, yo, ssk, k2—6 sts.

Next Row: Knit.

Next Row: K1, ssk, yo, k2tog, k1—5 sts.

Next Row: Knit.

Last Row: K1, ssk (2 sts on right-hand needle), slip first st over 2nd st on right-hand needle (bind off made), [k1, slip first st over 2nd st on right hand needle] 2 times (1 st remains on right-hand needle). Do not fasten off.

Lace Border

Place remaining loop onto crochet hook, ch 1, turn piece so WS is facing you.

Row 1 (WS): Work 71 sc evenly spaced across first (diagonal) side of lower edge, work 3 sc in point, work 71 sc evenly spaced across 2nd (diagonal) side of lower edge, turn—145 sc. Note: If necessary, work more or fewer stitches to ensure that the edge lays flat. This may result in more or fewer stitches than needed for the lace pattern. If necessary, skip more or fewer stitches in the next row to eliminate or make up for the extra or fewer stitches. Ensure that a (dc, ch 2, dc) is worked in the center sc of the 3-sc point.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first 5 sc, *ch 4, sk next 3 sc, (dc, ch 2, dc) in next sc, ch 4, sk next 3 sc **, sc in next 9 sc; repeat from * across to last 5 sc, ending last repeat at **, sc in last 5 sc, turn—9 pattern repeats.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in first 4 sc, *ch 5, sk next ch-4 sp, dc in next dc, ch 2, (dc, ch 2, dc) in next ch-2 sp, ch 2, dc in next dc, ch 5, sk next ch-4 sp **, sk next sc, sc in next 7 sc; repeat from * across to last 5 sc, ending last repeat at **, sk next sc, sc in last 4 sc, turn.

Using yarn needle, weave in all ends. Block gently to finished measurements.
