How to Host a Frozen Inspired Party

Our whole family’s rooting for Disney’s Frozen for Best Animated film in this weekend’s Oscars. It’s my daughter’s love for the movie however, that really runs strong and true — if she had her way it would no doubt sweep all categories of awards! And so, like with any good event, the idea for a Frozen-themed soiree was born from the purest of enthusiasm. Since us crafty-types tend to also like a good theme, why not combine kids’ love for a flick with our need to knit by putting together a Frozen inspired party fit for all? Here’s how:

Make crowns: In my opinion, any event is made better with thematic costumes, but for a kid-centric gathering dress-up just makes sense. A quick, inexpensive option for a movie set amidst cold are these simple, icicle crowns. You’ll need 3 (tiara version) or 7 (crown version) iridescent or silver pipe cleaners per head piece. Use 2 pipe cleaners twisted together to form a ring for base (adjust if necessary for head size); bend additional pipe cleaner(s) into a zigzag formation; twist ends of zigzagged piece(s) onto base. Voila!

Make snacks. Winter white food alone evokes a feeling of frosty fjords, but kiddos will get a kick out character inspired treats, too. A toothpick stacked with marshmallows and decorated with sprinkle eyes, candy noses and pretzel stick arms make an adorable (and tasty) Olaf!

Plain or white cheddar popcorn in clear, plastic cups make for salty snow flurries in “icy” containers. Add table-fellows of Snowball cookies, Frosted (cereal) Snack Mix, and “Cold” Cakes (white, frosted cupcakes sprinkled with blue sugar crystals), and your tunra-y tableau is almost complete! Don’t forget reindeer get hungry, too. A bowl full of carrots for Sven makes for healthy, happy animals!

Frozen Mittens, by the Yarnspirations Design Team

Fight the freeze. While your tiny Elsas, Annas and Kristoffs are reenacting scenes from the movie, parents can combat the frost bite by making mittens. Tell your knitting pals to bring supplies, then provide guests with the pattern for our Elsa-inspired pair!
